According to the Motor Trend 2009/2010 Buyers Guide it's supposed to compete with the V6 Camaro and Mustang, but I think most people are going to lump it in with the new Accord or Altima coupes. Don't worry about ever seeing one of these, except in your rear view. It definitely does NOT fit into pony car status.

The same way that people enjoy throwing american products under the bus, people will steriotype this car as a Hyundai.

Not saying its right, but it WILL be a steriotype.

One result of this steriotype will be the soon-to-be-common "dude... seriously? Hyundai?"

Other than that, the car will be very successfull. It will probaly appeal to people who have the $$ range in the low 20's high teens Competiting with the baseline camaro mustang and challenger. Now the people that do their homework will pursue the Camaro, the people that want a convertable will pursue the mustang, and people who believe outdated steriotypes will get the japanese car just because its japanese and rumored to be of higher reliability........ And the dodge dealer will buy his daughter the challenger.

A tick over 13.0 sec. and you're through the quarter-mile. It's a rush, of course, but not overly dramatic. Try the same thing with this pair's predecessors of 1970 or so and you'll find yourself in a bit of a wrestling match. Ain't progress wonderful? Maybe yes, and maybe sometimes it's fun to wrestle."

It's still a Hyundai and to me it looks like a family car basically it SUCKS and will NEVER compete with the american muscle cars

True, and I agree.

The Hyundai Genesis Coupe turbo 4 (stock) will be slower than the V6 Camaro. But it probably won't be by much. But it's looking like it will cost less. And it's almost 200lbs lighter than the V6 Camaro. And also seeing that it's got the EVO's block and it's a 2.0L turbo 4cyl. A tune, and full bolt-ons could easily give it 300WHP easily. Now it's not fair that I'm comparing a stock to a modded car, I realize that. But if the Genesis Coupe turbo 4 does cost like 18-19k. For the price difference alone between it and a V6 Camaro LS, I'd take the Genesis Coupe turbo 4 over the Camaro V6 use that extra couple k saved and have a turbo Genesis Coupe that's quicker than a Camaro V6 for probably what it would have costed just to buy the Camaro V6... (well if I didn't get the GM employee discount... )

The Genesis Coupe V6 could be just as fast or in fact quicker than the Camaro V6, but it'll more than likely be priced around what a Camaro SS will cost, so there's nothing more to say about that.

But seeing that most of you are already calling this car a ricer because it's Japanese then you know once the tuners get a hold of this car. (they already have) It's going to be competing with the Camaro performance wise, no matter how you want to respond to what I just said it will, and mark my words.

This car is just the beginning of the "affordable" RWD 2+2 seater coupe market and once Nissan and Toyota get back in the game, there's going to be more competition for the Camaro, Mustang, and Challenger then all of you may want...

... I wouldn't be so sure about that.

Amen. This is 2008 and the stage is being set for a different kind of performance war (how exciting). Hyundai is getting serious with this car, and a new Supra or Celica is on the horizon filling the gap that Toyota has had in their product line for a long time.

The nice thing to know is that the Camaro SS seems to have been designed so well with enough power and tech that it can stand up against the upcoming import surge.

All the price rumors I've heard were 2-3k more than yours ...the V6 wasn't supposed to start below $25k last time I read something about it.

More quality...nah. It's equal or less. The weight-cuts they put into this had to have turned it into a tin-can. The reviews and comparisons will reveal that, I'm sure.

Lighter, yes. Faster is debateable till they get out onto the streets. Don't jump the gun, or hold you're breath. As far as I'm concerned .1-.2 seconds isn't worth arguing over unless you're arguing on paper.

The interior is a matter of opinion. I honestly think the Genesis coupe is fugly inside and out. It looks to me like the dies melted as they installed them in the stamping plant...

Two of the worst cars I ever had were Oldsmobiles. Each of them would break down and strand me once every 2-3 months. The Elantra I used to own never stranded me. The 1st-gen Tiburon my parents used to have was also rock-solid.

So regarding the prospect of Hyundais being more reliable than a GM product, well...in my personal experience, they have been.

I'm happy to see there's at least some other open minded people out there.

I remember back in the late 80's and 90's when GM was making the craptastic 3rd Gen Camaro/Firebird cars like the RX7, 300ZX, and Supra were giving them a run for their money. By the mid 90's the MKIV Supra had actually outperformed the C4 ZR1 Corvette. And I'm not saying that any cars out there are better performing than the Camaro SS, I'm not but the competition in the next few years is about to really heat up. The Camaro SS isn't in the cross hairs but the Camaro V6 is...

Agreed. I really commend GM on the Camaro. The Camaro SS should be able to hold its own for quite a while. It will be interesting though after 2012 though esp with the next gen Mustang, and Toyota and Nissan's RWD 2+2 seater 2dr coupes....

What model year were each of those cars?

To me the concept of pony car vs. tuner car also has to do with how the power is made. Pony cars make naturally aspirated all motor power. Tuners make power via forced induction which requires additional "tuning" and up keep. That's one way I think about the two. Pony and muscle cars have big cubes and tuners have big turbos. And the country of origin also plays a part. That being said the more I read about the car it seems it might be a nice little ride. Not sure I am a fan of the exterior styling. And I have no idea how it will handle.

I do like the generalization between the two.

Although I'm going to point out a couple exceptions....

Let's not forget the Mustang and Camaros of the late 70's and 80's...

The 84-86 SVO Mustang had a 2.3L turbocharged Inline 4...

So that was a turbo 4 production Mustang so then would that not be considered a "Pony car"?

Also there's a good chance that the 2012 next gen Mustang will the ECOBOOST twin turbo V6 as an optional power train. So does that mean that an ECOBOOSTED Mustang won't be a pony car, but a tuner car? That's just a hypothetical question.

But, I do agree with you overall...

Yeah I don't know how I'll feel about those. It's kind of an evolution of the car into another niche. Like the Grand National was a bada$$ car but out on a different branch. I'm not against the idea of factory turbos in the American cars but if I'm wanting an American Muscle car I would rather have a V8 versus a turbo six to start with. and some might say pony car and muscle car are two different things. I do remember there was even talks of using a turbo version of the 5 cylinder engine on the new Camaro way back.
