Facepalmtacular: Toyota Sues Dealer for Expanding

This is where I would usually say something sarcastic, but Toyota has me so baffled by this one that I all I can do is tell it how it is.

Toyota has sued a gargantuan dealership chain for expanding into another region. The expansion includes acquiring Lexus and Scion franchises. Evidence suggests that Toyota does not want Group 1 to sell those vehicles.

Toyota has not publicly explained the objection.

Leftlane reported the article. Discuss.

Are there enough facepalms yet?

Would Group 1 Toyota like to change their name to Group 1 Chevrolet, Group 1 Buick-GMC, or Group 1 Cadillac?

I don't see the problem.

I'm tired of seeing companies try to expand their business and be as successful as they can.

I can see some reasons why Toyota might oppose it. It could think Group 1 is going to become overextended, financially or otherwise. If Group 1 were to go under, I don't think Toyota wants it dragging down 100+ dealers with it. Two, selling cars doesn't necessarily equal happy customers. I can think of a couple dealer chains that sell plenty of cars but that I would NEVER go to again. If you're doing a shit job with the outlets you already have, why would the parent company want you acquiring more? Three, my guess is Group 1 and Toyota had a contract. Don't like the terms? Then sell Hondas or Nissans.

so toyota addresses its concern about group 1 overextending itself financially by suing them and further reducing Group 1's cash reservoir? seems either unlikely or extremely stupid.

toyota may have given youa headache, but unfortunately for some, toyota has given much worse. If you want to sue, get in line.....the back of the line starts down around the block!
