Great danes (surprisingly great family dogs - tend to love small children), german shepards (german standard, not AKC crap), Standard poodles (arguably the most intelligent of all breeds and absolutely the best watch dogs and incredibly easy to train). Worked five years with a dog handler. Did obedience, off leash aggression and drug search training. the following comments are based solely on my personal experiences.

I don't think my comment was clear. They're great around cattle, you can tell they were bred to herd...It's other breeds I have difficulty with at times, they want to chase, not herd.

I have a blue heeler that I absolutely love. He is very loyal and all in all a very good dog. He isn't the kind of dog for a family that doesn't get outside and run around though. He has a lot of energy, even at 12 years old!

My mother has a pit bull mix that is a very nice dog. He was a rescued dog that was abused, but he doesn't have a mean bone in his body.

Finally, my good friend has a pit bull/boston terrier mix, also a rescue dog that was abuse. Very adorable and loving dog. I keep trying to take her from him and if my wife has her way she will get her.
