I think you're putting too much emphasis on where the profits go. Where the profits went didn't matter when a whole bunch of Big 3 auto-workers lost their jobs whilst their friends working at the Toyota plant kept theirs.

Which is worst: American companies outsourcing labor to China, or Japanese companies making their cars here?

Look at China: most of the goods made there are from foreign owned companies, and yet their economy is far stronger than the US right now.

The disdain for a Camry made in America amazes me. Sounds like a bunch of whiners who can't see the big picture; that or some not-so-subtle xenophobia.

Doesn't matter. Camry's quickly becoming the official old person's car. Nobody under 30 wants to be seen in one.

If GM's looking for something to benchmark for the next-gen Malibu, it should be the new Sonata.

My disdain for a Camry made ANYWHERE has to do with 2 facts: 1 - It's freaking boring. Yawn. The Malibu or Taurus have a LOT more going for them imo. 2 - Even if it's built here, it benefits another country more. And the thing that REALLY bugs me about that, is that Japan PROTECTS their car market at home. But if WE try to do that people start whining and crying about it...

If the American lemmings hadn't all jumped off the cliff into Camries and Accords the american auto manufacturers wouldn't have been in such bad positions to begin with (still bad, but not AS bad). People have been brainwashd by the media to the point where they believe the Camry is the best and basically refuse to give great cars like the Malibu and Fusion a chance.

There's a mathematical equation for that:

BENZ - VIAGRA = SONOTA

I agree with you, but we should celebrate that the Camry is made here rather than Thailand or some other country. It gives people jobs. Look an American Toyota auto-worker in the eye and tell him he should lose his job because his company has a Japanese name.

However, I do agree with you in that I think a lot of people in N.America have a silly anti-American bias that's antiquated; but that's just the law of the market. The Big 3 have to pay the price for crap products that they've made for several decades - it takes time to undo the bad image they've created for themselves. Americans loved American cars a few decades ago - that love didn't disappear overnight.

Tough. Malibu already has a 4-cylinder standard.

So why don't people like the Malibu.. isn't it a better car

I'm curious, The LTZ is cheaper than the fully loaded Camry.. what gives ?

Time to put on my flame suit. When I bought my 2000 Toyota Camry it was the car of the year. This car was the first new car I ever had. I did make sure that the car I got was the one I wanted. It wasn't so boring, as it was a Gen 4.5 with the updated headlights and tail lights, and I had the sunroof and spoiler as well as the alloy wheels. This set my "cookie cutter" car apart from the rest of them.

I made some mods in 2008 - 2009 to really set it apart. Nav system, OEM fogs, and the black halo headlights.

I still can't get rid of that car. It has been with me for 10 years, and it was a different time. It was indeed an american built car, and a good majority of the parts say "Denso Detroit, MI" on them. I think all that has happened in my life since I got that car and it is crazy.

In 2000 - 2001 I would agree with the Camry being the car of the year, but their re-design in 2002 was horrible. The Gen6, (current generation) looks alright, but I wouldn't call it car of the year.

Anyhow, I love my Camry and I want to see how many years I can get out of it. It is going to be my wifes car and the Camaro my car.

Here is something else I've come across here in College town. Not to stereotype or anything, but it appears that asians prefer Toyotas. I had someone I knew that had an Asian student staying with them, and wouldn't look at any other car besides a Toyota. You could have tried to give her a "GM" toyota (Chevy Prism) and she wouldn't take it.

Maybe it is the brand loyalty that made it the car of the year this year.

The Camaro got me back into looking at GM. It helped my dad was retired from there and I could get the GM discount.
