Florida Statutes 316.271 - Horns and warning devices

(3) The driver of a motor vehicle shall, when reasonably necessary to ensure safe operation, give audible warning with his or her horn, but shall not otherwise use such horn when upon a highway.

(8) A violation of this section is a noncriminal traffic infraction, punishable as a nonmoving violation as provided in chapter 318.

I must add however, that I am a police officer. And THAT traffic stop, as told, is ridiculous in my own opinion. Sounds like an ass-clown.

Next we will be getting pulled over for driving with our windows down because it's "unsafe" if you roll.

Here in Washington State, they made that a law a couple of years ago. I strongly disagree with the law because of situations like the one you just pointed out.

Apparently, some people take it when you honk at them the wrong way...and the nanny state legislature had to get involved. Not to get too political, but if you don't like these kind of laws, vote out the people that make them and vote in people who will legislate sane laws.

Yeah there is, not sure what they call it though. I worked with a guy who got a ticket in Wichita for honking his horn to get somebody's attention.

I heard if from my uncle (living in Florida), who heard it from his wife's sister's boyfriend, that there is a new law down there, that has yet to be put into writing, that there is a manditory minimum of six camaros that must be pulled over per month per officer. Give the officer a break, he is just trying to get his quota in early!

If that is, indeed, the law, it would be interesting to hear the rationale. On the surface, it just seems stupid and intrusive. All too often, I end up behind someone at a light who is so engaged in their cellphone conversation (or some other distracting activity) that they completely miss the fact that the light has turned green. I'm a busy person and schedule my time carefully to make sure I can be wherever I need to be with a little extra buffer time--that's all my busy day can typically afford (I can't just leave 20 minutes early to account for idiots).

So not being able to beep the horn politely in these instances is simply ridiculous. There is no safety implication at issue (don't even try to convince me that there is...if my beeping the horn caused someone who is stationary to somehow have an accident, that person should not be allowed behind the wheel of a car).

Anyway...my two cents...not sure why this post got me this riled up--but it did. Asinine laws, and the intrusion of local and federal govt where they don't belong are starting to get on my nerves!

Too bad we don't have a grammer statute available. Wow.

Okay, I'm messing with you, a little.

As a police officer, I don't think I would make that stop, unless I thought it would lead to something else. That sounds like a good PC type statute. It's not uncommon for stops like that to lead into a bigger issue, ie;DUI, drugs, suspended driver, etc.

Again, the officer didn't issue a citation, so one would think he was having a slow day or was "window shopping" (as we call cheese PC stops) for a more serious infraction.

Laws like these are actually very helpful in catching real crooks. It's a double edged sword, you can't have your cake and eat it too.

you got my +1 on this! here in florida we have what the tourists call crazy turn lanes with lots of painted arrows pointing everywhere. lots of us dont have time to sit through a 5 minute light every half mile because someone in line isnt paying attention or cant comprehend where and when to go.
