Official statement from GM.

Basically they just want to start marketing with "Chevrolet." They don't care if people still say "Chevy."
This is why I don't see it being that big of a deal..their not forcing everyone to stop using Chevy and to say Chevrolet..it's just in their marketing department that they will be use Chevrolet in their adds. Honostly, I can see and understand why they did it, just feels more professional and carries more of a statement.(IMO)

I guess goes to show how far the media will take something and twist it. Seems like the the article the OP posted, they tried to make it seem as if GM was making it a crime for everyone to say the word Chevy..

They're going to market their official name of the brand, rather than the nickname. Its not that big of a deal. I don't know why they think its a good idea, but I don't know why so many people care either. Makes no difference to me if I see an ad for a Chevrolet Malibu or a Chevy Silverado

One more chapter in the "they eat their young" saga of "Detroit"...
I've never seen GM refer to GMC as Jimmy, though they acknowledged the WWII era nickname by using it on a now defunked SUV, but they never said "Introducing the all new Jimmy Sierra". Likewise, I don't think they've used "Caddy Escalade" or "Poncho Firebird" in any advertising either.

It's just the name of the brand is Chevrolet, and that's what they're going to use in advertising. It doesn't stop anyone saying Chevy. Have you ever seen a Mercury adverstisement where they refer to a car as a "Merc Sable"?
It's really strange outrage when i've seen so many pictures on this site of first gen badges on 5th gen Camaros. What do the badges say? Camaro

Thats retarted...
Look, im all for Chevy or Chevrolet or Guaddalawhothehellcares for all that matters as long as its GM, but they have to understand its JUST a nickname, you cant criticize people for shorting a long word down for easier grammatical communication. GM is just getting a little too carried away with this. Now if it comes up in legal discussion or documents i can understand that but just being anal about people talking on the factory floor? C'mon...

Whats next? GM will cease to call Chevrolet Chevrolet and GMC GMC and now it will all be universally reffered to as "GM" just to make marketing THAT much easier? Gimme a break...

You need to remember that they are now selling Chevrolets all over the world, and the term "Chevy" is mostly an American Nickname.. So instead of having to write separate corporate memos for domestic and foreign markets, they ask their people to refrain from using the Term "Chevy" because it is not recognized worldwide. that is all it is about...

"You can't criticize people for shortening a long word"
GM didn't criticize anyone. It's an internal memo about Chevrolet advertising.

+1 Remember GM isn't only in America. It's all over the world.

CHEVY

CHEVY has been used for decade's. Chevy, baseball and apple pie is an American tradition. What wrong with these idiots. " Took my Chevy to the levee and the levee was dry". What a great song!!!!!!.
