Quick: What's the fastest production sedan in the world? Does it wear a Mercedes-Benz, Audi or BMW badge? What about the Porsche Panamera Turbo or the Cadillac CTS-V? There's no doubt that each of these vehicular behemoths is capable of ripping off some fast times on a race track near you, but Subaru is out to prove that its new 2011 WRX STI sedan has the chops to keep pace with the best from the rest of the world.

To prove its point, Subaru recently sent test driver and four-time World Rally Champion Tommi Mäkinen out to the famed Nürburgring Nordschleife course in Germany with a 2011 STI test car. According to reports, the vehicle used in this testing was equipped with a few significant upgrades including a larger turbocharger that normally sees duty in the Japanese R205 model and some lightweight aluminum bits, but one thing is for certain: the 7:55 lap time is a mighty impressive result.

For those keeping track of such things, the previous best lap set by a Subaru WRX STI was in 2004 at 7:59.41 and the new mark set by Subaru – albeit with a prototype, not a production car – is quicker than any of the aforementioned competition. Best of all, there's a video of one entire lap around the 'Ring and you can find the in-car footage after the break.

Yeah, definitely respect the performance this thing puts out, but I find most of Subaru's designs are a little boring, new STI doesn't do much to dissuade me from that.

Agreed. I think both them and Mitsubishi went a little soft. Whatever - I wouldn't get one until after CAMARO

Tommi Makinen was the real deal in WRC. And you never really really lose the ability go quick, as Schumacher is proving this year...

My ex had a 2009 Impresa and I drove it all the time. I really had no complaints, they're great cars.

I know the John H., that drove CTS-V to the record, was a pretty good driver, but I don't know how good in comparison to this cat. These cars, though, are in totally different leagues, AND, CTS-V weighs, what, another 500-plus pounds. That's not an excuse, but just goes to show it has the technology to go stupid fast and in ultra comfort

I'd roll one - honestly. I couldn't afford CTS-V, but I seriously have considered these cars in the past. I poke fun, but have great respect

I had an STi in 04. It would crush just about anything you threw at it, road racing wise. 13 second stock 1/4 mile. Rad cars, would have gone that route if they didn't turn it into a hatchback a few years back. Looks like it's back to being a sedan. The motto for those cars is real roads have curves...

Anyone watch the video? I think he could have done better. Not smooth at all, and wrong gear selection a couple times. Granted he was a hell of alot faster then I could every be, but for a pro, I wasn't impressed.

WHAT?! I thought it was closer to about 3300-3500 lbs.? Regardless - being 1000 lbs. lighter makes CTS-V (IMVHO) look even better! I can't take anything away from teh STI, though
