They must figure a bankrupt company can't continue doing business when we all know that's not true. Chevy is #1

I think tons of people care about risking their lives to fly on an airline owned by a company that might be cutting corners on maintenance because they don't have enough money to pay for it. How much business is lost to an airline the week after they have a crash that kills everyone on board? Yeah, I think people care about their lives much more than a power window motor going out in their car.

We will agree to disagree.

Those industrial giants are still needed. And transition to new technology takes capital, lots of capital. Technology may be changing at light speed, but the practical application of it takes time. So, I guess my point is that industry may not be dragging its feet when it comes to advancement as much as you're being impatient and not giving it the necessary time.
I think your change of major was very wise. You're in a great field - hang in there!!

You're right. Technology is intangible. Software cannot be eaten, it can't keep you warm, and it can't keep you out of the rain. But it does provide a means to produce those things much easier, and much more efficiently.

I guess I'm a somewhat of an anomaly when it comes to the discussion of software vs manufacturing, as I directly worth with both. I write software that controls plant machinery, like barcode scanners and robots and RFID antennas, etc. So I feel that everything can be effected by advances in technology. The use of software can greatly improve the product, as well as make it cheaper. I guess industrial giants need the advances in technology to remain profitable, and the same can be said for the reverse.

Aunite Em!, Auntie em!, It's a Twister..........

Gosh, we aren't in Kansas anymore.

If GM goes down in flames, the value of any vehicle won't be worth the paper the title is printed on. Don't delude yourself. No Jobs, no money, no demand.

Regardless of political stripe, we had all best hope and pray that this company (along with Ford, Chrysler and... dare I say it..... the imports weather this storm. If they don't it will be devastating to the World Economy.

My decision hinges upon whether or not I still have a job when they come out. And as an aside, to those dealers who told me when I phone dthem that they were going $2500-4000 over sticker.... Good luck. You will shoot yourselvesin the head!

There, I feel better now that I have that rant off my chest!

However, look at what we have: A robotic line doing what used to be the work of 20 people. Times how many robotic lines ? Understand one thing though IMO if the wage (inc benefits and retirement) wasn't killing the automakers, they would never have invested the money in the robots. They aren't free BUT when compared to $78 per hour for the average UAW employee (just read that somewhere else here) it doesn't take too long relatively speaking to pay off millions of dollars of robotic investment.

They aren't going under. They will probably HAVE to go bankrupt in order to "purge" the union contracts. We (cause it is our money) can throw all we want of it at GM but the problem persists. They were losing billions a quarter before the economy tanked. They simply can not compete at $78 per hour vs $40 at the US Toyota plant (the numbers are close anyways to what I read here earlier in a different thread). The only way GM survives is by getting its pay scales down to where those of private industry are. That's a sad fact but it's also reality.
