Because it would be sad if GM, not long after coming out of bankruptcy, had as much debt as Ford.

Ford has been making stride in paying down debt and they need to keep up with what they have been doing. They still have a considerable amount of debt though.

You're right on that, but the real value of MLC (not the inflated, convoluted trading values) does impact the total payback to our governments. Though I'm not sure if thats what he was trying to get at or not.

Like I said, I'll believe it when I see it. Do you guys remember, "We want to assure our customers and stakeholders than GM is not considering bankruptcy..." I don't know the exact quote, but it was something along those lines within a few weeks of their bankruptcy.

Don't worry, I'll bookmark it. We can talk about this in 2025 when GM has payed their loans back completely.

We'll see when even the first quarter is posted. If they even break even, I'll give you the benefit and "eat my words." You guys seem to think that good talk means good results, but I'll give you a little tip: A corporation will never talk about the bad.

source? Just wondering, as Ford took out loans against nearly EVERYthing they owned to give themselves a nice cash cushion (which ultimately saved them from the same fate as GM and Chrysler). Not flaming you or anything here, just would like to see your numbers if you have them

Worth mentioning, at least one of those payments was made possible by funds given to them in the bailout. The other, I haven't looked into it and since GM doesn't have to tell us where it came from I might not be able to find out if I did.

There is absolutely no way to know whether GM is profitable right now because they aren't publicly traded and, as such, don't have to report very much publicly. The notion that they are profitable because they are moving sheet-metal isn't a very good indicator either since GM was losing money at an alarming rate for years pre-bankruptcy despite being a huge corporation in terms of volume.

My take, if GM's financial situation was as rosy as some here suggest GM would almost certainly be more forthcoming with that information since the same would represent good press for obvious reasons.
