Teamsters Interrupt Sergio Marchionne Speech

Teamsters dressed as crash dummies crashed a speech, demonstrating the epitome of unprofessional behavior. This sort of tantrum over not having a job in favor of someone else disgusts me. Union or not, there's no excuse for this sort of behavior. As a result of this, I would go out of my way to avoid hiring from this union due to the clearly organized method of this protest. I've been passed as a job applicant, and so has most of our community at some point. No one here decided the best way to get hired was to storm into a room where the boss was giving a public address. I'm disgusted. Article is by Leftlane News.

Discuss.

If union members can go on strike against a business then shouldn't the business be allowed to go on strike against the union members?

Tried to make that un-political as possible.

I probably should suggest keeping the discussion on this topic in the field of professionalism rather than politics. Forget about the fact that these guys belong to a union. Could this be any further from the way a professional should behave?

I need more facts. Some would say the Boston tea party was unprofessional.

Any more in order to get someone to listen sometimes one needs to do something that doesn't seem right. This gets them national exposure ,and it just might cause chrysler to rethink it's position if the media gets to involved. I don't agree with it on a personal level for reasons that I can't discuss in this forum.

I think that was my very poorly articulated point. No one should act like that when they don't get a job. Its pretty disgusting to see people act that way. So I agree with you, if I owned a company I would make it a point to steer clear of these guys because of said behavior.

Nothing bad about unions, just that the business should have the same right. I think there are as many good unions as there are examples like this. Just like you could say with any group of people in general.

Is it because they didn't get the job? Or is it because they lost the job to a non-union contractor? What does their contract say? Not enough info to make a judgment. Rude? yes. Are they in the wrong? Don't know, but they got the attention they needed possibly.

Need all the facts.

Chrysler hired non-union people to do a job. The union got mad. People from the union, not necessarily by the union's request, behaved unprofessionally.

exactly, definitely not the way to go about changing Chrysler's minds. Hold meetings, get petitions signed, show Chrysler that hiring union members will HELP them... an immature stunt like this will only hurt their position. If they wanted to demonstrate, a more appropriate approach would have been to do so outside the conference area, hand out flyers and such as people enter and exit, etc, all while being perfectly friendly and professional and NOT swearing at people.

Loudmouths acting like a jackass tend to get heard, but rarely listened to. I shake my head in disappointment when they actually do get listened to.

Pretty hard to do since a core reason they do these things is they've a been a legally protected class for so long. Chrysler really can't do anything to discourage it for fear of getting themselves into trouble....

Its not entirely that simple. Unions can't walk out for any reason, or at any time. That would imply a work stoppage and everyone could lose their job. Strikes are intended for use in bargaining for a contract only.

I'm a Teamster, and quite frankly I say put 'em to work....as crash test dummies. Never should anyone pull this kind of stunt. It makes everyone involved look bad. Not only is a union there to regulate the company, it should also keep the individual members in line. All of these people should have their cards pulled.
