Just because you have a gun doesn't mean you have to kill someone. And unless you live in an area with a really screwed up local government, it should be perfectly legal to own a firearm in your home. I think the argument against owning a firearm is a little flawed, being that a responsible firearm owner it going to act a lot different than some trigger happy thug on the street. Its not about shooting the first second you get nervous or trying to scare people off with your weapon. Its about being able to save your ass when you have no other choice- for example, if this salesman had charged her in her carport, what would she have been able to do without a firearm?

Tasers make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside because you don't have to try to kill when you use them, but the fact that they are either one time use or extremely limited distance, and only incapacitate the exact moment you are using them, make them pretty much completely useless for self or home defense use compared to a firearm. Remember, no one is going to get shot unless they give you a damn good reason for them to deserve it.

Seriously, he rings the doorbell to see if you are home. She said she was somewhere and it took her a minute to get to the door. This is classic, ring the doorbell to see if anyone is home, they dont answer there ya go.

How do you know he had a gun, is everyone where you live allowed to have gun? Seriously. If I am up to no good, IE scoping cars and bikes, do I really give a crap about wether I can have a gun?

Also the taking pictures thing, maybe he was just taking pics out of admiration or maybe he was taking pics for an order for a buyer.

Also if you take the advice to get a gun, practice with it and know how to use it in a pressure situation. More often than not, during a crisis situation that homeowners gun it taken from them or is found to be of no use. This is either because they are not proficient with it or freeze up in a crisis.

As the old saying goes and ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure and some of you are definitely not prepared.

Being careful is not being paranoid...

I am home alone a lot especialy when my husband's current job requires travel, so I don't answer the door if I am not expecting someone. I also have "protection" at the house just in case...

The ringing of the door bell could be a good fact, but some home invaders will ring the door bell to see if anyone is home and if there is not they may break in to the house or in your case car port. If someone answers they have some lame reason for being there and move on...

This happened last year near my house in MI ( a nice area)...Guy rings the door bell, woman home alone sees a truck she doesn't recognize so does not answer the door. A few minutes later she hears a window break, takes home phone and cell phone and locks herself in the bathroom, calls 911. The 911 tape you can hear these 2 guys ransacking the house while she begs for the police to hurry...They realize someone's in the BR and instead of leaving they try to break down the door....Thankfully the police arrive prior to them getting in...They catch one guy and never catch the other.

It's good to be careful and have protection if needed...IMHO

I swear I was going to post this video here today. It was on my local news. The dog also flattened a couple of the tires lol. Guess his master's not a Ford guy.

Good news is the dog got a reprieve and will be allowed to return home with the stipulations that he take obedience classes and the owner secures the fence. Sorry for going

Ok Story Time.

Summer Vacation 2006 (before the movie 'The Strangers' came out, in case any of you want to draw a parallel)

The misses and I were up in the family cabin tucked back in the mountains of Vermont. We don't have neighbors.... not real ones anyways. Our closest neighbor is over a mile away. One night we had a cookout behind the house, nothing fancy.... but we were outside later than normal... and for reference, its a medium sized two story house with the bedrooms on the 2nd floor.

Anyways, that night we watched a movie and went to bed.

Round 1:15 am I woke up to what sounded like someone frantically pounding on the front door.

I immediately got out of bed and ran over to the window, but the front door wasn't visible and I couldn't see anything.

The knocking stopped.

I'm thinking.... Ok. WTF. Its either someone outside who needs help or someone outside who is trying to see if we aren't home so they can break in....

So I grabbed the phone, called the police. They would be here "As soon as they can.... probably 25 - 30 minutes"

So I'm thinking.... Great. If I've got some wacko with a gun downstairs I'm screwed. Then I remember my father always kept a 12 Gauge in the Basement. OK Great I'm saved.

Then the banging started again. But there were 2 things wrong with these noises... it wasn't front door help me! frantic banging...it was slower and quieter. Like...

Bang .... (Mississippi)... Bang.... (Mississippi)... Bang....

So I pretty much knew that this wasn't a good guy.

And second... it was coming from the living room.... which has these big French doors (all glass) and is between me - the basement stairs.

The misses calls down "Here, take my gun"

HUH????????

The misses (without my knowledge) carried with her, a revolver which shoots shotgun shells. Not only is this gun small enough to fit into a purse, but its completely badass. So anyways I ran into the bedroom, got her weapon, lowered a 2nd floor window and fired twice.

Whatever/Whoever it was, didn't come back.

Here's where it gets really weird. When the police got there they went over all the windows around the outside of the house for prints, but nothing showed up. I was walking with the cop talking to him about who could have done this, and he goes....

"You know... We've had three reports of incidents just like the one you just had in the past two months, both in Vermont and New Hampshire. "

And I'm like, great. At least it wasn't some crazy neighbor who is trying to kill me because he doesn't like the way I mow my Lawn (people in Vermont are nuts)

And he caps it off with this...

"Actually just two weeks ago, a woman up in Rutland had a very similar incident. She turned on all the Floodlights outside of her house, and called us swearing up and down that her and her boys saw BigFoot standing on their porch"

Long pause.

"Uh huh......"

He just looks at me. Nods. And goes,

"Well. I best be going."

lol.... Anyways, moral of the story is, always keep a weapon handy in a place that wont be impossible to access if your put into a tough spot. I don't care who tries to tell you that having a weapon in your home is dangerous... Handle it carefully and responsibly, and it might save you from BigFoot.
