I was looking at the Mazda's but they seem underpowered and overpriced compared to similar sized cars....

Civics are very reliable. I had a an 09 Civic Si sedan before the Camaro. It was a fun little car and had plenty of space. The dealership even bought it back for a little bit more than I owed on it.

I friend just bought a used Mazda RX8, and it's already giving her problems. Fortunately, it was still under warranty. But I've never been a fan of Mazda.

Well, 3 $1000 cars should certainly last at least an average of 2 years a piece. Or ...

Get a small loan for the used car. If you can manage to get a ~$20k loan for a new car, getting a couple grand for a used should be easy. As for a car, if the civic was a bit small for you I wouldn't recommend any compacts. You want something that has a bit of get up and go, so you should probably be looking at something like a 2006ish G6 GT or other similar cars. Small-midsize with a V6 that are a few years old. Bit more room, decent power, still have a bit of warranty left, and a good one can be had for under 10k. Thats what I did when I bough my Grand Am a year ago (which is why I thought of the G6)

Next choice would be something that is even older, that you can buy outright with your cash in hand. Gets a bit more difficult to find something that is in good condition and reliable, but there are plenty of people who underprice their cars, not knowing what they're really worth. Then again, there are also plenty of people who sell junk for cheap. Find a 'car guru', could be your dad, an older brother, friend, neighbour, someone who can show you what to look for.

I'd say look for a car in the 5 grand range. $3000 is a little bit too cheap. I'm not saying that you're gonna get screwed over, but it's a possibility. For 5000 you can get a 2003 - 05 wrx, which is a pretty fine car, especially for college.

2.0L Turbo - fuel efficient
Very strong engine
Small car, can fit anywhere
Is very easy to drive
etc.

And it is about the same size as a civic, but inside it feels roomier and more comfortable at least to me.

Ok you can go for sporty or you can go for sleeper type.
sporty you can get a 90s Toyata MR2, fun normally relaible unlike todays Toyotas.

or you can go out & get a used 3rd gen Or 4th gen Camaro. you dont have to get a 5th gen right away.

for a sleeper type go out & get a Grand Prix GTP (around the 2000year make) or a Buick regal GS around that same year, both have the 3800 supercharged engine in it & untuned they do 15s in the 1/4mile & tuned with very few mods on them they can be quickly in the 12s lol.

My 98 regal GS has well over 200k miles on it & Its still running.

of heck with it & head towards a classic insurance is cheap.(normally) but its something you can do yourself & the parts are always around & you would be kewl in school lol.

Just picking up my soon to be 16yr old son a 1957 3600 pick up flatbed & its going to cost us $35 amonth for insurance even with hiim driving it & it doesnt change the vettes our our camaros.

^^ i remember a girl at my high school who had a pretty sweet 69 ford pickup. don't know what they paid for it or insurance, but i remember it sure got a lot of attention. it wasn't in show condition, but it ran good & was still in pretty good shape - not to mention God help any civic, tC, prius, etc had they wrecked into it

I don't even car if it's sporty anymore. I just need something that will last. I found a 1997 Toyota Camry with 101k miles on it for $3500, and I think the seller is negotiable. It looks clean too. Maybe I'll just look into that.

Just wondering, how many miles is too many? I'm looking at used Accords, Camrys, Elantras, and Altimas. I'm trying to look for something with under 115K on it, but I'm not sure if that's a good number to be looking for with my price range...
