Uniformed officer arrested for DUI

http://www.forbes.com/feeds/ap/2010/...gebusinessnews

Here's one of the better articles about the story....

On my way to work Monday Morning, headed Eastbound on C470, my wife spotted a bunch of Police Vehicles on the opposite side of the highway... and one of the officers looked to be hand cuffed.

We thought it was odd, but we dismissed it and continued to work... later on my wife informed me that the officer was being arrested for DUI...

This just blows my mind... and I am at a total loss for words.

While on duty? Drunk? In a police car? With a firearm? In uniform?

He's SCREWED.

Had he been off duty, in a personal vehicle and not provided his sample for a few hours, he could have gotten away with it, like the two cops in nyc last year.

Yes... while there are alcoholics in every profession from garbage man to cops to surgeons to presidents, it's a totally different thing when it's a cop. There is a double standard.

A person in another profession can just call in sick, technically for that day they are. I'd rather have another pilot fly the plane that I'm on then a drunk one. I'd also rather have an operation delayed for a day then a surgeon screwing up.

Cops, on the other hand are the people who enforce the rules. As such, they should not only enforce them but also serve as role models. They are the ones that shouldn't drive drunk, they are the ones that shouldn't use cell phones while driving, they are the ones that shouldn't be speeding unless they are going to an emergency or chasing someone, they are the ones that shouldn't be driving past red lights, and they are the ones who shouldn't be driving with lights and sirens on to a donut shop to get some cofee, etc. Yet they are the ones who break all of the rules. Honestly... WTF?

Ok, so you are implying that you have never done any single one of those... I highly doubt it. What some people don't understand is that cops are human beings, just like you and just like me, they make mistakes. Now being drunk while working is stupid no matter what job you have, and is not acceptable, whether you are a cop, lawyer, priest, teacher, fireman, or a janitor, etc.

And just so you follow what you said, the next time you get pulled over, PLEASE tell the officer to give you a ticket, because "As such, they should not only enforce them but also serve as role models." So a ticket would show them being role models, right?

...and quit pointing out one man's mistake, and group him with ALL officers. Officers in general deserve close to, if not just as much respect as soldiers in the army. They get out there, and literally sacrifice their lives each day, just so you can come onto a forum and slander them, and compare them to one.... up.

I know that they deserve respect. I have family members and neighbors who are cops, actually detectives. So yes, I know that they deserve respect. And I'm not trying to group them with one .... up.

What I'm saying is just like everybody else, they should follow the laws. Yet whenever I see a cop car, they never follow the laws.

.... Because what you're saying is it's perfectly normal for police officers to turn their lights and sirens on for lunch time, go to a donut shop order a few donuts and coffee and sit down and talk to each other for hours. There is no emergency in the donut shop as I'm hanging out in there too and I'd see it.

And in my opinion, they deserve more respect than soldiers only for the reason that they are on the front lines here protecting us. Otherwise who knows how much crime would be going on and if we'd be innocent bystanders.

That however does not mean that they have the right to get away with breaking laws because they are human. If a civilian were to break a law, then they would arrest the person. But if a cop speeds because he wants to, then he can get away with it.

They're human and just as susceptible as the next guy to make mistakes. Role models are for suckers, how many "role models" have we seen that disappoint when it turns out they are mortal after all. I do believe there is a reasonable expectation that law enforcement should somehow always and without question be above reproach but thats not going to happen 100% of the time. If we're going to hold them to higher standard then we should also make sure they can get the help they need when they falter.

Ok, I had to piece your sentence out so what I will do it go by each item I have made bold.

First one- You may not have been trying to group it with just one, but you did group it. How many times have you seen cops turn on their lights for a donut shop? Personally I have seen one cop turn on his lights to get to KFC, just one, and I knew he was a .... up.

Second one- should is a horrible word. You SHOULD not speed, but do you? You SHOULD not lie, but I'm sure you have. This world is NOT perfect, and it will never be. Hold yourself accountable for yourself, and if you see a cop acting stupid, you SHOULD call the local police station and report him/her.

Third one- Never is another horrible word. So there hasn't been one instance where you have seen a cop going the speed limit, if not slower? I know I have.

You edited this last piece in, so I will comment on it. Noone has the "right" to get away with breaking laws. Civilians break laws every day, some get arrested, some don't. Some cops break the law, some get arrested, some don't, and just to prove click on the main link in the OP,

Cops are people too and they have a lot of stress. While I don't condone drinking and driving, I'm amazed that we don't hear this kind of story more often. Most of the cops I know love to drink and I'm sure this guy isn't the only cop to ever have a drink in a patrol car. He just got busted.
