Competition for the Vette?

So, I'm definitely a Chevy kind of guy--I had a Ford Ranger as my first car, then a handed down 03 Trailblazer LTZ, and now I'm making payments on my first new car, the Camaro 2LT RS. I didn't like my Ford much at all, but I digress...

I love the Ford GT (and GT40, for the purists). I understand that a new Vette could beat it, but we're also looking at a 2010 model Chevy beating a 2006 model Ford.

Why did Ford stop making them after the centennial celebration? I think they should have kept them and made a more economical version ($50k starting) to compete with the Vette. In my opinion, competition is always good for commercialism.

I love the Vette, as well, but there's just something about the GT for me.

Discuss. And please don't make this into a war between Ford and Chevy. Thanks.

That was a great vehicle, although I've always preferred the Corvette. There are several similarly styled vehicles in the market, but they aren't affordable as they are exotic, low-production vehicles.

Ford seems to be more profit-driven than performance-driven. GM has an interest in performance, leading to epic products like the ZR1. The Ford GT was just not as profitable as Ford would like it to be. They're designed as a company to be a big player with lots of big products, and I just don't think they liked having to change anything for that vehicle.

They barely out performed the Z06 and the 500 hp Viper, but cost about as much as the two of them combined. Those who wanted them, and could afford them, bought them. After that, they were discontinued.

The new GT was a labor of love, even at 140K there probably wasn't much of a profit margin... AMAZING car! Corvette has it's own factory, GT had basically a big shop.

The ZR1 is similar, in that it's an exotic, but it's basically a base Corvette using exotic parts (I know that's a stretch... BACK-OFF! )

In other words....

FORD: "I need 500 custom built chassis for a custom car."
GM: "I need 50,000 Corvette chassis, and build 500 of them out of Titanium instead of aluminum."

Or... If you order 1,000,000 ipods, you'll get a better 'per each' price than if you order 10.

Ford would have to build a factory just for that car, then hope the sales were there. GM kicked their butt in sales back in the 2 seater T-bird era, so Ford don't want any more of that @ss whoopin LOL

It's the same thing, he wasn't talking about the car technically, it was only to get the point across

I have tremendous respect for the originals. The new ones just don''t seem as impressive to me as the originals. They should have tried a lot harder to keep weight down. So what if it would have cost an extra $30k? Once you are talking about supercars, that sort of money doesn't really matter too much.

I'm not a big Ford guy, but I would love to have a newer one and an old one along with my SS of course.

Drive one before you decide to fall in love with it. I drove one back in November. They absolutely SUCK to climb in and out of. The shifter feels like a stick in a bucket of wet mud when you row through the gears. The good side is the torque is so big and flat, you don't need to shift much. It does feel really good and stable at high speed but that is about all you can say good for them. JMHO.
