Swedish Mauser

So my girlfriend has been telling me about her grandpa's gun collection for a while. It sounded like he had quite the collection, but nothing she said could prepare me for this! This man could LITERALLY arm a small rebel force! Needless to say, he is now my hero!!

Anyway! So he has 2 or 3 Swedish Mausers amongst his collection, and he mentioned he might be willing to sell one

So my question to anyone who might also happen to own a Mauser (swedish or otherwise), how are the maintenance on these masterpieces? Is there any unique issues with them that I should know about? Did some reading on wiki, but it didn't really mention any maintenance worries and such. Thanks for any advice you can give!

They are the same as any other gun. Once you get used to cleaning it, it is no problem. I used to be scared of cleaning an ar, now its old hat.

Any idea of year of manufacture? Condition?

Worst case scenario take it to a REPUTABLE gun shop and have them go thru it for you to be sure it is tip top.

Whether you will shoot it or not, I think that you should think about buying a gone that is tailored to your height and how big your chest is. I know that it sounds funny, but when you go to a hunting store and want to buy a gun, then that's how they decide that it's right for you.

Unless you want to start your own gun collection and don't care about firing the actual weapon, at which point it won't matter if it's the gun for you because you're just collecting antique guns

I have a German Mauser 8mm. I use it to hunt. I just oil it regularly... the damn thing is indestructible.

I have over 40 guns, my grandfather used to collect them.

My other WWII gun is an M1 carbine. I love that thing.

Swedish Mausers are a good bolt action gun. Most of them were sold as military surplus. Some were re-bored to 308 from NATO calibers. See the link below...

Well the one I'm getting was made in 1895 I believe (That was stamped on the receiver anyway). It looked pretty marvelously clean in the chamber, didn't get a good look at the bore yet. It's been kept in pretty good condition, so I'm not too worried about it being able to shoot.

This I'm not too worried about. Was in the Marines for 4 years, and the this Mauser is the standard sized one (not the long barrel variant). Though he DOES have one of those too...

Awesome, I'd love to find an M1 as well someday! So it sounds like just the standard cleaning after firing and oiling should do the trick for this thing.

From what I've read this round is really great, good distance and accuracy with better penetration than the 5.56. Lil bit expensive from what I've seen on the shelves though, $27 for 20 rounds! (maybe that's not that expensive, not sure as I haven't really had to BUY ammo before now heheh) I'll have to look into one of the reloading things...

That's not expensive ammo. Although I'm not a hunter, some of my family members are, and if I remember correctly it's like 50 bucks for a little box of ammo.

Ok, cool. Yeah the only ammo I've really bought was .22 rounds for my squirrel rifle (which is dirt cheap in comparison)

No. I have a semi-auto .30-06, a .30-30, a .243, a .225, and a .22 magnum all with scopes though.

The sights on the Mauser are really cool, because it has this little flappy sight that you flip up for shooting further out. I haven't shot mine that far yet though.

Ok, so my girlfriend's grandpa ended up GIVING me the Mauser as a gift before I could buy it from him
