Any coin experts out there?

So I have some 50 state quarters that now seem to include The District of Columbia, American Samoa, Puerto Rico and who knows where else that are minted in Philadelphia and Denver according to their mint marks.

What is unusual is that I have found 2 quarters with an S mint mark for San Fransisco. These two quarters (New York and Ohio) are the only 2 I have ever seen not minted in Philadelphia and Denver. And I have been through thousands of quarters.

Not only that, but these 2 with the S mint mark are a higher lustre and look much better sharper than the more common P or D coins. I have heard that the quarters were proofed in San Francisco, but how did I find these in circulation?

I believe that San Francisco is still used to mint some of the uncirculated and proof sets. However, any person can take them out of the packaging and put them into circulation if they need the $0.25.

"San Francisco, California:
Production of regular proof coin sets in clad and silver; production of commemorative coins as authorized by Congress."

Saw something related to this on Pawn Stars too; people have been known to attempt to fake that S on coins (though usually with older and rarer coins). It's possible that someone doing this may have practices on quarters or somethign But I think the first response sounds more likely.

Sounds like you got some circulated proof coins.

Oh look at the side of the quarters see if they contain copper in the middle. They also made silver proof sets every year of the state quarters.

Whats crazy is that I have a modern day rarity and I didn't even know it. In 1999 when they released the silver proof set, I bought it. Little did I know it would be worth a few hundred dollars now.

There out of a proof set, which are sold at a premium by the US mint, Someone broke up a set and spent it,that happens more often when the economy is bad and people are out of work..

I started one, but gave up. Too many states, too long of a time period and too much effort for something i won't get to enjoy.
