The G8 would make GREAT Impala, not a direct competitor, differnt class of vehicles. Its more likely that the Camaro competes with a Corvette than to say it competes with a G8 (Impala)
This is my thinking, how a large 4 door sedan with somewhat generic looks a competitor for a low slung 2 door coupe with distinctive styling and a heritage name? I'd think a new RWD Impala would Complement the Camaro, not challenge it.

When GM stopped production on the GTO, they started working on something to fill that void again, eventually the G8 came out. Then the whole economic downturn happened and they released the 5th gen. camaro, so when they decided to stop producing pontiacs, they saw that the G8 would only rob the new camaro's sales. It would be in direct competition. So they came up with a solution, which was to kill the G8.

Now that the GTO has been out of production for a few years and the G8s have been bought out by customers, the camaro gets it's place back. So, they won't create a new gen GTO or put the G8 back into production (well unless they replace the impala with it, but that's not gonna happen). It makes no sense to release a direct competitor from within, it would be stupid of them if they were to do that. Camaro vs. GTO or Camaro vs. G8

Also, pontiac is dead. And it's not coming back for a number of years. Reasoning is that they didn't sell the brand because they may want to bring it back when the economy improves. So there won't be any GTOs or G8s on the road anytime soon. But maybe in 20 years, who knows.
Sorry I just have to say "umm no" to this whole entire post.

The G8 was killed because Pontiac's operations were wound down. The Pontiac brand was not sold for two reasons, aside from the G8 every vehicle in the lineup was derivative of another vehicle in their brands, and Pontiac was directly integrated into the core GM operations. It would cost too much money to sell off the brand, whereas Saturn was a subsidiary, and Hummer had specific product. The G8 was a 4 door sedan and the only relation to the Camaro (aside from being built on the same platform) is that its V8 and RWD. They are NOT direct competitors in any way. Most G8 buyers are not shopping Camaros, nor vice versa (Im not talking enthusiasts here which while everyone thinks differently make up a tremendously small percentage of the market).

GM will not bring back the Pontiac brand, ever. That would be jumping right back into the craphole that got them where they are. They have enough brands to cover every market segment, there is no reason to do anything else otherwise.

Now that I think about it, you're right.
