Ideas for a used car
I'm looking for a something that will be my beater. I need it to be able to get decent gas milage and be able to handle a dirt road. Any ideas? I was thinking about a Subaru Outback but they are crazy expensive even with 150K+ miles. I would like to only spent 4-5k.

Do you want american power, german performance and luxury or subaru? (There are no good asian automakers besides subie.) What's the mile range that you want the car to be in? Leather or cloth? Beaten to hell, good condition, or outstanding condition? Clean title, salvage or rebuilt? By the way, just because a car has a salvage title doesn't mean that it's f***** up, i.e. it could have been stolen and when it was found a lot of the interior parts could have been missing, or a tree fell on the roof, or an idiot on a motorcycle didn't watch were he was going and slammed right into the trunk. I've seen salvage cars like this. Doesn't mean that they didn't run, the actual mechanical condition of the cars was amazing. |

Also find a mechanic with a dealers license, or just someone with a dealers license for that matter, that goes to dealer only auctions such as manheim. A lot of the cars at dealer only auctions are in good condition and sell for ten grand less than the cars found on dealers' lots. Why? Because they buy them there, pay the fees, need to have them transported, usually need them cleaned and then mark the prices up. Some dealers can take you along claim that you are the driver and have you drive the cars to their lots. After they get the paperwork sorted, you "buy" the car from them and then take it home.

There are a lot of ways that you can get a car without buying it from a dealer

Also a point that you need to remember, we are in a buyers market. So, you can get a lot of good deals, you just need to find them. It's kind of the reason why right now there aren't that many home sales going on currently. People paid 500,000 for homes a few years ago, now if they are going to sell them, they will maybe (if their lucky) get half that.
Just go find a dealer, if you want to go that route, that's desperate for a sell. That's how I managed to buy my camaro for 2 grand less than the asking price. Or go to a private seller who wants to get something newer. |
