It get's similar mileage (equinox gets 23-26, tahoe hybrid gets 20-21)

The TMV at edmunds of a 2008 black 4wd tahoe with 20,000 miles in outstanding condition is valued at $42,212.

And 20,000 miles is basically a "new" car, it usually isn't ruined yet and is in very good condition.

The TMV of a brand new 2010 ltz, black granite metallic equinox with audio system w/ navigation and rear entertainment, 3.0L v6, 19" chrome clad wheels, power sunroof, front license plate bracket and the destination fee is valued at $37,560.

Both are the dealer retail prices.

So this proves my point. No real need for a crossover

Why stop at 2008? You can get an even better appointed model thats a few years older for even less money. Used is almost always a better value except in freakishly rare cases. It has nothing to do with crossover vs SUV. Compare a 2009 Tahoe against a similarly equipped 2009 Traverse with the same mileage, then get back to us. BTW, how does this at all relate to a hybrid Equinox?

right. but still does not make sense for the consumer either

Well, I guess they could also add a couple grand to the price of every non-hybrid just to make hybrid a better buy ... but unless every competitor does the same it will be an epic disaster

Agreed, again...but without the technology GM invested in the Tahoe and Silverado -- it could not be put into an Equinox......

If we are talking about a 2009 tahoe, that's not a hybrid, vs a 2009 traverse

then it's simple the traverse wins

Actually, depends on what someone needs though too, one person may just need a people mover for a young family going on trips but another person may need an actual suv that has 4wd.

Traverse has AWD available. Granted, its not the same as 4wd but its said to be capable enough. The single biggest advantage the Tahoe would have is towing. Maxes out at 8200 lbs vs 5200 lbs.

Anyway, this isn't about Tahoe vs Traverse.
