Ford's U.S. sales top GM's

DETROIT - Ford posted a 43% jump in February U.S. auto sales and outsold General Motors for the first time in nearly a dozen years as it grabbed sales from struggling Toyota.
Ford's sales surged thanks to strong demand for its cars and because it was able to grab some customers from Toyota, whose sales fell 9% due to its massive safety recall.
Ford sold 334 more cars than GM in February, its first victory over its U.S. rival since August 1998, when GM was in the midst of strike.
GM reported an 11.5 percent increase, helped by new models and Toyota's woes.
While Ford (F, Fortune 500) reported a 43% increase in U.S. sales in February, much of the gain was due to a 74% jump in fleet sales to businesses. Rental car companies alone accounted for just over 30,000 vehicle sales. Without the rental companies, Ford sales would have been up only 13% in the month.
But including sales at the Volvo unit Ford is in the process of selling, its sales total topped GM's for the first time since August 1998, when a strike briefly shut many GM plants.

Percent change in vehicles sold from February 2009 to February 2010 for other major automakers::

Subaru::
Up 38%

Nissan::
Up 29%

Ford Motor Co.::
Up 43%

Toyota::
Down 9%

Honda::
Up 13%

GM::
Up 11.6%

Kia::

Chrysler::

With the layoffs Ford just went through, that is good news for a lot of people!

However, you left out:

"While Ford (F, Fortune 500) reported a 43% increase in U.S. sales in February, much of the gain was due to a 74% jump in fleet sales to businesses. Right now I'd imagine Ford is thanking God for rental companies! And Volvo, of course.

I'm pretty sure rental companies' money is just as green as everyone elses.

I'm sure, too. Was hoping it was actual consumers, though, rather than an industry so they could forcast a steady trend. But no.

It be but a blip, mon.

Apparently the remaining 91% of Toyota buyers don't watch the news.

If ford learned any lessons in the last oil spike they will make a line of cars that has something amazing...... good gas mileage! I'd love to get a small car so i can leave my baby in the garage on rainy days and winter.

Yes -- but banking on fleet-sales isn't the best way to run a Car company. That's half the reason why the make the distinction, and all the reason GM made a solid push away from fleet sales last year.

You sure about that? GM fleet sales were up 115% for February.

Why would a company "push away" from any kind of sale? They're in business to "sell".
