Military members in here.

I'm debating on joining the navy or the marines. The reason why is cause I got thrown under the bus at my last job and blamed for a theft I did not commit. Even though it's a misdomeanor I can't find a job anywhere. No one wants to take a chance on me. I've thought about joining one of those branches for a long time but this happening may force me into it if I can't find work by the summer. I was just wondering if any of you that served have any regrets about it? I really don't know anything about the subject and was just looking for some advise.

ok one question, well really a few. If you join the Navy or Marines you are expected to be out at sea for months on end are you ready for that?

where army or airforce you are yes expected to be gone for months on end & even a year or more. but at least then you are on the ground or in the air lol.

also what jobs are you looking at doing?????

even the military are cracking down on what kind of trouble you can get in before they allow you to get in.

Well I started school with the intent on getting an engineering degree. I got a part time job selling auto parts and I was so good at it apparently I moved up pretty quick and was making good money so I stupidly quit going to school. Now I have no job and no money and I have tried everything as far as job hunting. The reason I was considering the military was I always wanted to be a navy pilot if I joined. I doubt that'll happen but I am prepared to be out at sea, that part I wouldn't mind. My sisters husband is a marine ad has been over a year and he hasn't gotten his feet wet yet but there's no tellin what they'll do with him. As far as what I would do as a job in the military, I can work on pretty much anything automotive, mechanical, electrical, things with my hands. It's in my blood I think every man in my family on both sides did something along those lines. I'm just debating it, I may luck out and find work but right now it's not looking good. I'm gonna be 25 this year and I need to get my life on track. I'm being supported by my dad just like I was a kid again and I hate it. He's so damn proud of my sisters new husband too, he hasn't said it, but I know he wishes I was like him. He always brags about him all the time. I'd still be doing good if it wasn't for my damn boss, him and that company pretty much ruined my chances of ever getting another job in that field.

ok no matter what you have to go to the asvab test did you finish school? (high school at least?) if not you need to go back & finish it. most of the military will not take you if you have your GED (they will if you have high scores on the asvab test).

My husband is an aircraft mech in the airforce resevers plus one as a civy via the military.

I'm prior navy, and I can tell you its all about what you make out of it. take the asvab, if you can score 80+ you'll have an open window for the advanced electronics/nuke fields. If you are mature enough to put all the distractions aside and focus on whats important you wont flunk out of A and C schools. Then you'll make it to the fleet and once again if you can put all the distractions aside...or at least balance fun and focusing on your career/future you'll either have a very successful career, or get out after your enlistment with a lot of connections, a lot of training, certs, and experience. Depending on what rate you get you'll stand to make a lot of money in the civilian sector. (but like I said you get what you put in.) I was a missile technician in the navy, do a search on my job and you'll see what kind of jobs I'm qualified for. Unfortunately for me I'm out do to spinal injury and other medical complications, so I don't physically qualify for many jobs I know how to do, and I'm still making close to 60K a year. Like I said you get what you put in!

As for joining with a GED.... It does not matter how high you make on the ASVAB... You can not join with a GED.
THere was a time when it was possible.. but not any more. Thanks to the economy, more people are willing to join. Too many people in fact. So, the standards have gone up now.

You are from Hoover Alabama? Isnt it a small world. I am actually a Marine Active Duty who happens to be on Recruiting Duty in Cullman Alabama.

Now If you wanted to know more about the Marine Corps, and were up for the drive, I could teach you about it.

I will say this, I couldnt get you enlisted until April, I already have too many people lined up for March, they wont let me enlist but just so many a month (like I said, more people want to join these days).

Not only that, It would be the end of the summer most likely before we could actually get you sent to boot camp.

From one Camaro lover to another... I can help you out... if you want.

US Marine here...
1. can not join with a GED unless you have 15+ college credits.
2. Your job depends on how often you deploy, Ive been in for 8 years and have not seen combat yet :( its kind of depressing cause i really want to go! But i am in the advanced electronics field and we do most of our work in a labratory environment.
3. you should look at both branches and decide what you will be happy doing for at least 4 years of commitment. i joined for the uniforms! HAHA j/k. I am a lifer and enjoy being a Marine

Figure out what kind of job you believe you would be happy doing

Take the ASVAB, that is the test that will help classify you for your job availability.

There are a lot of jobs that require a large amount of training and there are a lot of jobs that would require a Security Clearance.

If you are not sure what job you want to do, do NOT join the Navy as a Non Rate or BM (Boatswains Mate).

Figure out what you would like to do for the 4 or 6 year commitment.

also, think about what you would like to do after you serve, because the job you have can help in your career after the Military.

The Navy does require you do more then Grunt like the Jar Heads (just jokin, the marines have some great jobs as well).

You can go online and see what kind of jobs are available, also Talk to the Recruiter's of both branches.

PS - the Navy does have a lot of jobs that do not require Sea Time. but then, you may be stuck in a crappy place like Hawaii. :-)

Good luck

Can't Believe I forgot that, also don't believe anything a recruiter has to say about a job in the military unless its in black and white. A lot of recruiters are like used car salesmen, If you want to know about a job or "what something is like" find out from someone who is/was doing it and not trying to fill a quota.

Im a Marine recruiter right now. If you have any questions feel free to pm me, or if you want my number to talk.

You can get in the Marines with a GED but you need 13 college credits too.

Also dont listen to anyone who isnt in the military, because most of the time they have no idea what they are talking about....like being out at sea months at a time for the Marines. LOL Yeah, if your infantry and on a MEU. But people outside like to generalize things bro.

Like every mom thinks their son is going to go staight to Iraq and die. LOL I love how stupid moms are.

Very true, though depending on what ports the MEU is stopping at you could see some cool places.
