BTW, an aquaintance living in Japan says the press there is saying the US is treating Toyota unfairly.

It simplifies things for Cruise control, Traction control, and the infamous On-Star Emergency slow down mode for stolen vehicles. those and probably a few I haven't thought of.

Sadly, for the most part, this is true...........just not for us.

Electronic throttle bodies do three things, eliminate need for the cruise control servo, eliminate need for the idle control solenoid, and allow for greater control in low traction situations. The technology behind the FBW is tried and true, but if you let beancounters get in the way of engineers bad things happen. I think Toyota loosened parameters to solve driveability problems and got a situation where fail-safe doesn't kick in properly.

I hate throttle by wire, I am pretty sure it's what killed my friend last year on his harley. He had his bike in for service twice before for the throttle sticking (was a brand new bike), harley dealer claimed it was fixed but then he went out to wyoming a week later and his friends who were riding behind him saw him rapidly accelerate into a curve and he lost it and died at the scene. He was a seasoned rider so no wise cracks about his riding ability. His bike is still in lock up for further evalutaion from his attorney and the dealer who claimed it was fixed. Another friend of mine has the newer bike with this feature as well and has had it stick twice already on him. Very dangerous the throttle by wire is reagrdless of it being on a car or bike.

I think disliking the TBW as a system is misdirected. IF designed properly...(see: GM, citing Number 3)...there are no issues. If the pedal itself is designed poorly, then it can cause accelration in traditional cable systems, too!! If the ECU is an interfering "middle-man"...and the algorithms are written poorly, then that can also be a problem...but the system itself is not flawed.
![]() There is a different feel, though...definitely. TBW pedals have a more "springy" and smooth travel to them, while traditional cable throttle pedals are mechanical in nature. I can't say, personally, I have a preference. |

I laughed when I read the post from Number 3 about the news in Japan. And remember a couple of weeks ago when Toyota dealers in the southeastern states blamed ABC news for "causing an panic" They want to stifle the messanger in any way possible. Good job ABC and SIU. Robin
