But you were right...China is our #1 creditor...and, of smaller importance, GM's #1 market...so we need to maintain good relations with China. If they stop buying our bonds, we're totally screwed. And I don't think Ford or GM would want to lose access to that huge market, either.

Huge market? We import 1 item over there to them importing 12 to us.. when we do they tax and tariff the shit out of it, so it is very unaffordable.

You gotta look at it from a corporate perspective though: pay a lil extra to sell some extra products in a country with 1.3 billion people or don't sell anything to them? The target market population is probably close to the TOTAL population of the US (300 millionish). That is a HUGE amount of money to be made, even if they lose some of it from tariffs they still make a good amount of profit.

I don't think you understand. It is almost impossible for Ford or GM to sell a car in china. End of story. They are taxed so badly that chinese can't afford them (considering a lot of chinese people do NOT drive cars..) If they buy a car, they pay less than 10K for the crappy chinese cars. End of story. It was a huge debate with the Obama GOP meeting.

I guess I'm a bit confused as to where you are getting that information. GM has a pretty substantial footprint in China:

Perhaps he means that it is difficult for GM to export cars to China.

But anyway, this thread is getting off topic and a little too political. Its about Toyota, not economic relationship with China.

First of all, I don't know a single person that owns a buick.

China has strict laws on local content and local manufacturing. Also, the Joint Ventures GM has (SGM, Wueling (sic?)) can not be foreign owned. In fact GM just sold the 1% controling interest back to SGM, now owning only 49%. Korea is another tough market to export to. No real laws, but apparently you are statistically more likely to get a tax audit if you buy a foreign car.

No one understands the advantage that a strong CAPTIVE/PROTECTED home market gives Japan, Korea and Germany.

Hopefully that will change soon.

Don't anyone count Toyota out. They have a government that backs them like no other company in the world. Nearly 0% interest rates for borrowing, no legacy costs for healthcare, still have Billions in the bank. And Japan will make sure $/Yen is to their advantage. And we Americans have short memories. I firmly believe that when people have problems with foreign cars (note I don't use import ) they simply say to themselves "man, just imagine how many problems I would have if I bought American". So unless this current issue continues for months or grows even bigger, they will find their way back in the hearts and minds of Americans sooner than you think. And don't forget, Hyundai/Kia are waiting in the wings. They are currently running the Toyota playbook on a much faster timeline.

If I had the money, I'd own the entire lineup.

And just because you don't know anybody who owns one must mean that they aren't selling, right?
