How did this happen?

I know, I know. This is a Camaro forum, granted I'm posting in the General/Other Cars discussion but I just wanted show you guys this.

I'm sure most of you have probably also seen this already and may be familiar with C&D's annual Lightning Lap. Well here's the article and the results for this year...

http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/...re+page-2.html

Hopefully for next year the Camaro SS will be on here, and we'll get to see how it stacks up.

But also I wanted to point out where the 2008 Cobalt SS Turbocharged ranked. It pulled the quickest lap time not only in its respective class but it pulled quicker lap times over cars like the Lancer EVO MR, BMW 135, Lexus IS-F, Audi S5, Honda S2000, Dodge Challenger SRT8, Lotus Elise Supercharged, Infiniti G37, Impreza STI, Dodge Caliber SRT-4, Mugen Civic Si, etc...

All this from a little FWD, sport variant of a production sub compact enonomy car. Proves that you can even have some fun with a car like a Cobalt.

Granted next year the next car for me is going to be a Camaro for sure... But if some reason I can't get a Camaro, I'll happily settle for this...

IIRC the SC Cobalt beat the Mustang GT a couple years ago.

And if GM can do that with a boring econo-box... just imagine what they can do with the Camaro!

Yeah, GM is really coming back with their GM Performance division and they are offering some very competitive products. In a time when everything in the market seems to be going in the exact oppositte direction.

I think the Camaro SS, is going to not only be a decently quick straight line performer, but I think it's also going to keep the Challenger and Mustang on their feet on an actual track as well!

The Camaro is going to really change the way people look at the "Pony Car".

I love seeing the Cobalt SS so high on the list. That is just an amazing 4-banger.

For me the problem with the Cobalt is the looks of the rear end. it's just... words can't even describe the ugliness imho.

it's kind of like a girl with a hot body but a questionable face. except with the car you can't just get drunk and ignore it

I actually like the back end of the 2dr compared to the 4dr Cobalt. I like how they tried to resemble the Corvette's split round tail lights... But either people like it or they don't. The new Cobalt SS Turbo has been getting great reviews from even magazines like Motor Trend that would tear this car apart in a second. Although the verdict is always the same. Great bargain car with great performance, but bland styling and cheap interior. Which for the most part I can agree with, seeing I own one.

But I guess if you can get over that, and enjoy it for the level of performance that it offers, it's a great car.

And it's already took 1st in Nationals for the SCCA autocross event this year in the stock class where it competes.

I think it's amazing how well that thing performs.

I think it could be a great car.

The reason I would prefer a Camaro, as I believe most of us would is that it has RWD instead of FWD. If you've driven both you know how fun a RWD car can be. And how you can actually feel it rotate while turning a corner at even low speeds.

The Cobalt may be able to lap the 'ring near as fast as the Camaro, but the driving enjoyment probably won't be close. Something you have to think about when being fed lots of numbers.

Totally. I have a Cobalt SS right now, and yeah it's probably about as much fun as a FWD car can get, but nowhere near as fun as a RWD car. Which is why the Camaro is #1 on my list for my next car. But yeah if GM gets too greedy and if the Camaro ends up being out of my budget for what I want, I guess I'll fall back on this...

3 of the top 10 are powered by chevy small blocks. As for the Camaro SS, I'm thinking it will be ~3:05-3:10
