The following comment applies to everyone complaining about taxes.

Please refrain from commenting on the tax structure you have a degree or at least a transcript that indicates that you have taken courses on the federal budget. There is more misinformation in this thread than there are in the Z28 Rumors Thread.

Most of the world pays more in oil than the US. This is usually due to taxes. Draw your conclusions from that.

Not only the Saudi's, out here in West Texas we have "Wind Farms" popping up all over. A friend of mine has ten of them on part of their land; they get $1000 per month, per wind turbine. $120K a year, needless to say, they don't grow cotton anymore!!!

Lots of wind farms popping up in Iowa as well (all over the place really).

I'm sure I have been paying taxes for a lot longer than you and a lot more of them than you ,and I don't need a degree to know that I don't want to give the gov't more reason to waste money. When they start getting spending under control and don't pay $500 for a fricken toilet seat or $250 for a hammer then I might be more willing to talk about giving some up.

Thanks for derailing a good conversation.

Good on them. I hope they're successful so that they can find a way to maintain a reasonable amount of stability. If things go south there-it would likely be bad for everyone.

You have to admit, this thread has been pretty good about staying in the lines. America was founded on tax-revolt and complaining about taxes is part of the American Way. Except for 1 notable post, people have been pretty low-key and apolitical.

wow, it seems alot of people in this thread believe everything they read in the news and from "studies"

i'll just make one comment on the "Reserve Life" stuff. i work as a Petroleum Engineer and i am assigned to fields in the Permian Basin (West Texas, for those who do not know). I GUARANTEE you that the life of some of the fields i work are much much much more than 8 years! the reserve life of one field i work for example has a life of over 50 years as long as the price per barrel is at or above $40. the field makes approx. 500 bbls per day, which doesn't sound like much compared to other places in the world. but as long as the field makes a profit it will continue to make oil. this is why i believe we will continue to be driving gas powered vehicles in at least my lifetime (i am 22 years old)

now i do agree we need to decrease our dependence on foreign oil, but taxing it won't solve the problem... politicians think they are always right, and look where that got us! if some states allowed us to drill on their land and off their shores, we would be producing more oil & gas domestically, reducing our dependence on foreign oil.

i also agree we need to find alternative sources of energy, but converting corn and soy to fuel only reduces our food supply! so why try and change something that has worked for us for the past 150 years?

i hate taxes just as much as everyone else does, i have to fork out over $1000 every 1st and 15th of the month just for taxes! our nation is just now turning around from a bad year economically so why hurt our pockets even more for fuel increasing taxes on the oil we use????

and FYI even treehuggers can't ignore oil! it makes up most of everything we use everyday! fuel, plastic, clothing, rubber, wax, lubricants, paint, etc...

I just wish they'd accelerate cellulosic ethanol production so we can stop worrying about this stuff...It's all posturing, and none of it is 'smart'.

We really need to look at something like Valcent's way of making fuel.

http://blog.valcent.net/?tag=algae-for-biofuel

The thing that we should do is build these algea growing centers near coal power plants since the stuff eats up the gases given off by these power plants.

Good points, but keep in mind that news and 'studies' are really all most people have to go off of. So it's great to hear from someone that actually KNOWS about this stuff like yourself As for ethanol, scientists have figured out how to make the stuff from switch grass now, and the method for doing so is supposed to be MUCH more efficient than making it from corn or soybeans (see wiki link)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Switchgrass#Bioenergy

And I believe that is what Dragoneye is referring to in his post below:

Also, I completely agree that adding new taxes at this point in time (especially something as huge as a gas tax) would severely hamper the recovery of the economy.
