Bumblebee vs. Shelby

So, funny story.

As some of you know, my GT500 is currently my daily driver and coming back to the office from lunch with a co-worker the other day, we turned the corner in the parking lot to see a yellow Transformers-edition SS Camaro parked in front of the main entrance to the building.

Given where it was sitting, I knew I would have to drive by it on my way to my parking space, and it would allow me to at least check it out in passing. Well, as I get closer to the car, one of the ladies who works in my department and who is pretty into cars, flags me down and says, “Hey, look what my husband went out and bought this morning!”, pointing to the Camaro. Of course, I give her props on the car and complimented her on how nice it looked. As we are talking, her husband (whom I’ve never met before) makes his way over to stand beside his wife next to my passenger window. Once again, I give him compliments on his new car and asked him how he liked it. He immediately commented on how much power it seemed to have and indicated that he would like to get my car out on SR-840 (a local 4-lane interstate highway) and see how my car and his stacked up to one another.

At this point, I smile and say, “I don’t think you want to do that.” to which he replies something about how everything he’s read says the 2010 GT500 and the SS Camaro are real close in performance and he felt confident that he would be able to hang neck-and-neck with me. Of course, he was not aware that my car was modified, but my passenger, who had sat there silently during the whole exchange, was. He asked the owner of the Camaro, “Hey, that’s a Transformers edition, correct?” And the guy shook his head in agreement. He then continued, “Well, that’s cool and all, but this car”, pointing at the car he was sitting in, “It’s more than meets the eye!”

I eventually fessed up to what I’d done to my car and he acknowledged, in that case, maybe he would wait until he’s made a few modifications of his own before he tried to hit me up for a run again.

So what was his response?

Response to what? What had been done to my car? He seemed shocked that I would have already went to that degree of modification to a brand new car, but seemed nonetheless impressed by it.

Funny story. Realize that most people buying a "426hp" new Camaro might be driving the fastest car they've ever owned before. Those of us who have/had quicker cars don't feel them to be that quick in stock form.

Bet your new GT500 with twin turbos surprises quite a few cars on the road. Everyone expects brand new cars to be stock-ish. What kind of power is yours making now?

Yeah, could be. He did seem to know his stuff and mentioned having owned other V8 Camaro's int he past. No telling if he's ever taken any of to a track though.

I certainly surprised a new M3 the other day. My car is currently making 705rwhp/742rwtq on the everyday 93 octane street tune and boost level. A slight bit more on the performance tune/boost level and a little more than that on the race gas tune/boost level.:emoticon7:

I thought my 510/480 felt quick. How does your car handle all that power as a daily driver. Did you change out tires? My car just spins in first and second with these Super Slow Goodyears. I've been hesitant to add more power if I can't actually use it on the street.

GT500 comes with a 19 ?(9.5) Wow I am sure its spinning. I sit at 450 and spin with 20x10 shelby's and a 285/30 nitto. I am dropping a 305/35 out back as soon as they come in.

I never understood why Ford will not use the bigger rim. There was a Z06 in my job lot yesterday, the VP of Op's bud came to visit...but dam..that car was beautiful. Carbon fiber rear wing, the works. Anyways Rear tires were a 345/35 and front was 275/30....The rears had to be on a 11. Why oh why Ford does not put that size on the GT500..or at least a 10~10.5..

The car drives just like it did stock. Unless your just one of those people who can’t keep their foot out of it, 98% of the time you’re not going to be getting into boost anyway.

As for the other part of your question, trying to get that kind of power down to the ground on the stock Goodyear’s is a lesson in futility. If I wanted to, I could break the tires loose in any of the first 4 forward gears at almost any speed. Realistically, there really is no need to even try and get that kind of power to the pavement, as only part throttle would likely allow you to beat all but the most aggressive street cars running around. I don’t street race in any case, so I’m not too worried about getting the power to the ground when driving it daily anyway. Now, the track, that is a whole other matter.

The C6 Z06 easily accommodates a 12.5 or 13.0 wide rear wheel for those 345 tires. Same as the Viper does. We usually run an 10.0 wide front wheel with a 285 wide front tire on either of these two cars.

FYI
