Survival is easier now than it has ever been...EVER. Average people have more leisure time then they have ever had before in the history of mankind. So instead of worrying about carrying on your name, or raising your own farmhands- we whine about how awful things are. But times aren't horrible- times are AMAZING. And bad things have always happened, but they didn't get repeated on every news cycle for weeks.

There are literally thousands of stories documenting this.

Half of the emotional issues American's have right now IMHO were seeded by the major networks having 4 hours of news to fill every day, and American's have enough spare time to watch some portion of it.

NEVER in history were people as dependant on government as we are today and that nation not fall to the ground miserably. I would venture to say we are the most dependant on government than anyone ever. Technology playing the cheif roll in our dependancy.

But ya, we could go back to the dark ages. I'd rather not though.

I don't disagree with you on being more dependant on government. I tend toward 'American Rugged Individualism' myself. But I'm not talking 800 years ago, I'm talking 50-100.

Some small examples: infant mortality in 1950 was 157 in 1000. It's 47 now. Less than 10% of the households had a tv in 1950, now you measure tvs in number per household. Average home size was around 1100 sq ft in 1950- now it's almost 2400 sq feet. We won't even get into life expectency.

Now you could say that TVs are part of the problem, but that's an opinion. As opposed to 2-3% of the population dying of TB in 1 year being part of the problem- which is hard to argue. Give or take a recession, these are the best of times for any 1st world nation right now ever in the history of mankind.

Again, I take this back to man-made GW. I don't think this is off-topic. 100 years ago-people were too busy to spend much time worrying about fuzzy science. You didn't have nearly as many scientists competing for funding, and most scientist were either practical scientists or teachers. Now you have a relatively large number of scientists who are competing for grants (because we have leisure time to spend more time on theoretical science). Scientists get grants by convincing people that it's important to the world to give them grants. The current system invites profiteering IMHO. I think we should take serious steps to limit pollution because it's the right thing to do-not because of an incomplete GW theory.

Barring some cataclysm, I still think our children and children's children will be able to find and live a good life in America. It may be harder to buy a house in the future, and you may only have 1 car per family- but I don't think it's going to be some Charles Dickens street urchin lifestyle. I doubt that any current country will be under water in 25 years unless it was going to be underwater anyway regardless of man made GW.

^^^ this. Exactly my feelings on the matter: we should limit pollution and constantly push for new automobile technology. Not because it's greener, but because its innovative. These electric vehicles ARE highly efficient with the power that they use. If someone were to come out with a gasoline engine that was even 85% efficient I would be impressed and would be all for getting into production.
