evening ho's.
I came in last night.... only to be told that I had the night off. so I got housed. some friends came from out of town, one of which whose husband is a BMW fanatic and he and I frequently get into debates over BMW vs GM/Chevy. and it just so happens he had a friend down with him. mind you both of these guys are engineers (the bmw guy is mech, the friend is elec). and they got to talking about bmw acronyms and how they had been working on an engine swap and couldnt get the fuel...something or other working with the modified wiring harness and some other electrical gremlins. so a few drinks go down and we get to discussing it.... they both were hesitant to listen to any option/idea I would provide.... till they mentioned that they were only using the computer to keep the coil pack ignition and didnt want to convert to a distributor style setup.... at which point I told them that you dont need a computer to run coils.... just a timing box. and in some cases, you dont even need that. to which they promply doubted... till I showed them that I've done 2 conversions, using coil packs, one without a computer and one with a distributor... a few more drinks were had.... and they drew a diagram of their wiring harness.... and after looking it over for a minute or two i re-drew the wiring they needed to modify and pointed out a few other things they could integrate into the car (battery cutoff, fuel cutoff, etc). they both looked at me and asked how I could figure it out. I told them that I like simplicity. I only want enough wires to power the spark plugs and feed my gauges. but Id be more than happy enough to help them toy with the car when I move up near there in the summer (the guy's been building the car for about 3 years now). and adding into the fact that electrical gremlins are a PITA, I try to minimize my dealings with them. but that doesnt mean that I dont know how to deal with them if I cant remove them completely. so a few more drinks were had and we all realized that we had bridged a gap between automotive brands and loyalties all due to the one thing that we had in common. the want and need for stronger, faster, better and the passion of being a hot rodder (and yes, I consider them hotrodders, they're just using a different platform and different engines). all in all, it was a fun time. good company, good drinks, good talks.
