That would definitely steal Ford's thunder.

Exactly... Again just a possibility, but let's face it. We know it's not coming out at launch... that's pretty much fact. The convertible won't come out until a year after the Camaro comes out. Maybe it could come out around then.

But what GM doesn't want is the hype of the Camaro dying... (although one could argue that it's already dead seeing that we've been waiting for it since 2006)

But when the next gen mustang debuts, it's going to be huge... And a lot of the media & consumer attention that will be towards the Camaro is going to shift when the next generation mustang comes out. It would be a perfect time for GM to debut the Z28... Although it sucks for us having to wait two more years for it...

The 2005 retro-styled Mustang did command that kind of attention. But the 2010 Mustang due out next summer is simply a refresh of the current Mustang. The chassis and greenhouse (roof and all window glass) remain unchanged (its a lot cheaper to change sheetmetal than glass). Exterior changes are limited to new front and rear fascias, bulging rear quarter panels (more like the '69 and '70 Mustangs), and maybe a new hood style. The mast-style radio antenna gets moved from atop the right front fender to the right rear fender. New taillights (angling up on the lower outside edges to give a more rounded look to the rear of the car) with white backup light segments inserted between the three red sections. Interior changes include a V-shape to the center radio/HVAC stack (instead of the previous vertical stack), rectangular center air vents (uglier than the current round vents) and radio control mounted on the steering wheel (like that's cutting edge technology). With the powertrains either unchanged or bumped up just a bit (if a 5.0L variant replaces the current 4.6L 3-valve V8) there truly isn't much that is really new about the 2010 Mustang. It is so similar to the current Mustang that it will not excite the press or the public upon its release. Part of this is on purpose, since the 2005+ S197 has sold very well and Ford does not want to drastically change the Mustang's design and alienate their customers.

Right. Yeah the 2010 Mustang will get some attention when it debuts. Also I'll be curious to see which auto show Ford will decide to debut it at. I'm guessing Detroit. But 2012 is going to be the "big" year for Ford. by 2012 every vehicle in their entire line-up will be re-freshed, new, or completely over-hauled. Ford is going to have the Fiesta state-side, and more than likely the the Euro-spec Focus. And most importantly the next gen Mustang. Which I think if GM waits a couple years to debut a Z28 that would be the right time to debut it.
