Why, GM, why?

GM has decided that their excitement brand needs to sell Aveos in the US, so that's what they're going to do. Meet the Pontiac G3.

I remember a couple of years ago GM swore they were going to cut down on the badge engineering, and then a couple of weeks later, they announced they were bringing the Pontiac Cobalt-clone from Canada, and now they're doing the same with the Wave/Aveo.

They have to sell those small cars. It's a need more than a want I'm sure.

It's one thing to sell a small car, but to tout Pontiac as a performance brand while selling a copy of a Chevy Aveo is a huge stretch. If Pontiac is going to sell a small car, and if it has to be from the Aveo family, it needs to offer some performance options not offered on the Chevy, and some different sheetmetal would be a giant plus. Slapping a different fascia on it and saying it's a Pontiac is part of the GM old-think that helped erode GM's market share over the last 30 years.

The conversation probably went something like this:

Exec 1: Man, that Aveo just isn't killing the competition like we want it to.
Exec 2: I know. I mean look at the Fit. It is the epitome of value, simplicity, and functionality. Then Ford is coming out with the stylish and fun Fiesta. Both of these cars are way more upscale than the Aveo.
Exec 1: Well we just have to sell these fuel efficient cars. They're the new hot product, and regulations require it anyway.
Exec 2: So do you think we should design and engineer a competing car that one-ups our rivals, redefines the segment, and presents a great image of the brand to our youngest buyers, giving them a reason to stick with us as they trade up?
Exec 1: Perhaps... but do you know what would work even better? Let's rebadge our low-buck, low thrills, antiquated econobox, slap on a new nose, hand it to our mid-range performance division, and give it and the original car half the marketing budget they need to succeed!
Exec 2: Brilliant! Now that's the kind of smart thinking that got us where we are today. And you know, if this works out, maybe we can give Cadillac a rebadged Aveo and call it the Cimmarron II, and give Pontiac another Lambda crossover and call it the G12.
Exec 1: Oh, that project is almost finished. The badges are just coming off the press now.

I know you're joking, but I could almost see it happening

More badge play..

Oh thats the chevy aveo...oh wait no its a pontiac g3...or was it an aveo...whatever

I'm just gonna stop separating brands within GM, i'm just gonna say from now on ...Oh thats the GM aveo/g3. There is no reason, NO REASON AT ALL, for there to be two different aveos. If it wasn't selling before, rebaging it won't make it sell better!

I'd feel the same way if I were still driving one. At least the Ion has a totally different look.

I own a 2001 Blazer with the ZR2 off-road package, but all my friends call it a Jimmy, probably cause my name is Jimmy. But is drives me nuts, cause they built a few ZR2 Jimmy's and they were only sold in Canada.

I can't understand why they are renaming it to the G3. They are already built as the Wave for Canada. But at its heart its a Dae Woo no matter what its called. I think its also one of GM's best selling vehicles (one you add up all the different names it sells under)
