"Son of a gun"

Ok I know this one is very common and almost everyone here has heard it but I wonder how many actually know what it means?

And before someone says it, the one Mythbusters did is not the correct meaning.

Doesn't it mean that they were the son of a military man?

How about "keep the ball rolling" anyone know where that came from?

And why would you then "stick a needle in your eye"?

That one is an oath to keep a secret...

Close. It means illegitimate son of a person who was in the navy.

When navy ships use to dock at ports, the crew would go out on the town and have some fun with the ladies. Since they wasn't allowed to carry enough money to rent a hotel room and civilians was strictly forbidden from being in the ship so taking them below decks to their quarters was way too risky, the crew would take them on deck and they would have their enjoyment underneath the guns of the ship. The way the guns was designed, they gave the couple almost complete privacy unless someone walked right up to them. Any children (mostly boys) that was conceived this way, was referred to as a "son of a gun" and was intended to be an insult.

"I'm done" what you say when your finished with whatever you are doing...
Taken from cooks that check for check doneness of baking goods by poking it with a fork or toothpick.

"a few cards short of a full deck"
or
" a few bricks shy of a full load"
It means your not playing with all your marbles or your a sandwich shy of a full lunch pail or maybe your elevator don't go all the way to the top.

"that boy's Smarter than a Coal Bucket"

"That boy's sharper than a marble"

"His brain is about like a BB in a Boxcar"

I liked this one from the Beverly Hillbillys, when Jethro wanted to become an Astronaut..
Jedd, "All that boy has in his head is a lot of Space"

What does this refer to?
"A screen door in a submarine"

"If it ain't broke, Don't fix it!"

Finer than frog's hair. (split 4 ways)
Finer than snuff and half as dusty.
Cuter than a bug's ear
Rarer than hen's teeth
Prettier than a blue speckled pup

Many of the other one's that I know are not PG rated.
