A good example of possible definition confusion would be a 351 Cleveland (big block) and a 351 Windsor (small block).

Small Blocks have been used since the early 50's. Same basic block casting with incremental changes along the way. The factory produced 265's through 400's with the same basic engine block.
Big Blocks are built from totaly different larger, heavier castings to begin with. All the internal parts are larger and heavier than small block parts. The factory put big block 396's through 454's in cars during the mid 60's and into the 70's. There are some acessories & components that will fit both big and small blocks such as distributors and bellhousings and maybe a few small parts. Mostly the small block engine parts fit small blocks and big block parts only fit big blocks. In the last few years big blocks were mostly used for marine engines. Those customers were given notice and have stocked up with enough engines to get them through the next few years. There will still be big blocks available from other sources but GM will not be building them ever again. -Mark. |
