Saw that one comming... dealers were doing outrageous things to get rid of new 08's well into this years 09 production... (48 months 0% interest, below gm emp pricing).
The bad on this though is its going to raise used vette prices slightly..

The Corvette is selling way under MSRP. This is a good call for now. Let's hope that it doesn't get any worse.

The Corvette priced it's self out of the common man's hands, and it is coming back to bite them... I am sorry to say it but the curtain may be coming down on our beloved Vette...

I was looking around at used Z06s this weekend. Saw two locally with chrome wheels, nav, 2LT (I think that's the package). One was a 2007 model with 13K miles for $52K. The other was a 2008 with 1200 miles for $59K. Pretty good deal on used if you ask me. I'd be pissed if I bought a new one and took a $20K hit on depreciation already.

just think of it this way, in 1965 a new Chevy Impala cost around $3500 (my dad bought one in 65 and still has the sticker) and you could get a new Vette for around $4,200.00, Now you can buy a new Impala for about $22,000 yet a Corvette is $50,000. If you could afford a Impala in 65 you could probably afford a Corvette.. Can you say that today?

would you like to compare the Impala to the Corvette? You may not have 60k to spend on a car, but millions of people do, and that is the market GM preaches to with this car. If the corvette were to flounder, GM wouldnt just loose buyers, they'd loose a whole market. The, I have alot of money, but not enough to buy a porsche, but i still want to go really really fast, market. |

You have to understand supply and demand too. GM isn't building corvettes for the common man. They are building limited amounts that they think will sell and could never have the supply for say what the malibu or an accord does. There is no demand for that. However if there is a market of folks out there that CAN afford a 60k toy then that is what they are building to.
Just b/c you can't afford one doesn't mean there aren't people out there willing to spend that much and want to which creates the market and demand and therefore a small supply with a higher price tag. I am sure it doesn't cost GM much more to make a vette then say a G8 or Camaro, but that is where they are making $ in a niche market. No other company offers that kind of performance for that big of a bargain even if 60k doesn't seem like a bargain to you or I |

I don't think it's the fact that the Corvette is expensive that's hurt it -- otherwise this has been a problem 30+ years in the making. In '79, for example, I've seen my Pop's magazines...you could get a camaro for about $5 grand, but to get a Corvette, you'd need to shell out ~$15,000. So it's been priced like this for some time...imvho, people just don't have the money to buy 'toys' like they used to. When you take that, compounded with the fact that these cars are selling for way under MSRP...this was probably a wise move... |

Everyone has missed my point. What I was saying is because Chevy has moved the Corvette up the performance market, it has priced it'self out of the normal mans price range. It used to be a Sportscar just about anyone could buy, I was not comparing the Vette to an Impala, just the afordability.
I know many people that would love to own a new Vette, but the prices have gone too high... this is the first time in many many years they are offering the Vette at below MSRP. Unless the next generation Corvette is a less expensive car it will be very difficult for GM to justify it's survival. I love the Corvette, and I used to own a 65 Sting Ray, I always wanted to own another one, a new one, but it seems that ever since I could finally justify a Sportscar the Vette has been out of my price range.

There are DIFFERENT GM cars which target that market now, so many of them that it wouldnt make sense to price the corvette competatively with them. It would change the car completely. |
