I guess I'm one of the luckier ones. I'm in my late 50's and been with the same company for 26 years. I've been working steady since I was a teenager. I have never been unemployed or had to collect unemployment.

Six months for me right after college. I managed to pick up a few odd jobs during that time and I had to sell most of my musical equipment to eat. Ah well, that's life.

I had my first job at a Sam's Club when I was 16. I've never not had a job. I'm now knocking on 35.

I'm pretty loyal. I've only worked for three different companies.

How does somebody not have a job? Do people hold out for management positions when they know they don't qualify for them?

Over 10% of somebodys don't have jobs at the moment.

When I was unemployed, there was a little bit of pride involved for me. I had just gotten out of art school and couldn't see myself flipping burgers to pay off my loans, so I did odd jobs until I finally got hired on as a designer somewhere.

Which is funny because as soon as I gave up, I accepted an $8/hr job at Disneyland. Later that day a web design employer called me back and hired me. I love Disneyland as a spectator, but it was pretty great to call them and tell them "thanks, but no thanks".

You're right. There are 10% of Americans that are out of jobs. My remarks were pretty insensitive.

I guess I've just never lived anywhere were jobs weren't plentiful. Salt Lake City is pretty recession proof for some reason.

I was out of work for about two weeks between jobs once. Other than that, I've been employed steadily for 5 years since I turned 16. I've worked at two main companies, though I also got a minimum wage job at the local movie theater for about 3 weeks between jobs once to keep an income.

Yay for you paying your student loans! I'm a collector for student loans and all to often I find people leave school and refuse minimum wage jobs because they think it is beneath them instead they just do nothing and do not pay their bills while waiting for a job in their "field". The object is to have a job, pay your debt and hope to find that gem of a job you worked so hard to earn a degree for eventually and not have to just settle for what puts food on the table but all in good time , not every body can find instant sucess.
