Couple things here. To the OP, Your post is very factual and yes it will certainly help get people out of tickets. However, when you are getting stopped, pull over to the side of the road. If you take 60 seconds to pull over, all I am thinking is that you are stashing something ot reaching for something bad.

Next. Respectable cops don't pull people over just to check out their car.

Lastly. Yes, some cops are jerks. Yes cops work a thankless job. To everyone that has had what they feel to be a bad experience then I am sorry. However, do not lump all the cops together as a bunch of bad apples.

I have bad experiences with plumbers, teachers, electricians, CAR SALESMEN, lawyers, mechanics, waiters, etc. I however do not think that all of XXXXXXX are bad people and trash talk them whenever someone will listen.

I appreciate you responding in this thread, and I want to clarify the 60 second rule...

Up here, not always is it safe for anyone to pull over immediately. We (where i live) have very high traffic areas and a very large demographic of bad drivers.

60 Seconds was more of a ''number'' it wasn't an implication to actually take 60 seconds... I'm trying to advise people that sometimes taking that extra few seconds to find a safe spot for both parties involved can often be rather appreciated.

The whole purpose of keeping your hands on the steering wheel with the door light on is to demonstrate to the officer that you have NOTHING in your hands and are also keeping your hands in plain view.

Which I can tell you I most certainly appreciate.

OK - Now I have to add my 2 cents. I/We do not hit the lights until we find a place where we want you to stop. Continue driving and it adds to my stress level. Are you hiding something? Getting a gun ready? Slowly pull over as soon as you see the lights behind you. Also, do not do anything until I/We get to the window. I do not want to see you digging all around the car prior to me making contact. Have everything you need in one spot and tell me where it is when I ask. If I have to stand there for 5 minutes while you try and find everything, you WILL get a ticket. Be curtious and respectful, and you will probably get a break. Argue, cry, and debate the stop = TICKET!! But that is just me. I remember what it was like to be young and have a hard time writing people for the same exact things that I have done. I also drive my new Camaro like I stole it!! Just waiting for the day I get stopped. The bottom line is that there are cops who should not be cops. If you get stopped by one, I am sorry!! After 14 years I have given up on trying to please everyone and explain my chosen profession. Unless you have seen what I have seen, have to wear body armor and a gun to work, you will not EVER understand. That is OK!! I now understand and do not take it personal. I wish you all the best and will protect you NO MATTER WHAT!!!

Its a bad idea to go digging around in your car looking for papers.LEO's have no idea what you may be getting. Just sit tight with hands on the wheel.

I dont want to start a debate here but I am going to say this for the last time then I'm going to stop posting in this thread entirely.

IF YOU GET YOUR SHIT OUT OF THE GLOVE BOX BEFORE THE OFFICER GETS THERE, HAVE YOUR DOME LIGHTS ON, AND YOUR HANDS CLEARLY VISIBLE ON THE STEERING WHEEL I doubt, I would have reason to believe the officer isn't going to freak right out.

(this should only take a SECOND or TWO)

Whyd you take so long to stop? - I was finding a safe spot for both you and I.

I saw you rummaging through your vehicle as soon as you stopped. - I wanted to retrieve my information that I know you'd probably want,

Well, I think you are hiding something - Sir i am in no way or shape trying to hide anything illegal in my car and if you'd like i'll gladly step out of the car and you can search anything you like.

This is a GENERAL thread

If you choose to not follow any of the points I've posted go ahead and do it, but in my experience, again i say MY experience, doing the above will usually HELP in getting you out of a ticket.

I haven't even wasted time suggesting politeness, or decency, or respect when interacting with the officer. I'm merely providing tips / suggestions / advice from MY EXPERIENCE

If you disagree with the above, then there must be some confusion.

So in the end, if you care not to read or follow any of the above then yes
Shut your mouth, turn your dome lights on (especially if its night time) keep your window down and place your hands on the steering wheel.

Since I'm defending / justifying my points I'll tell people what I do whenever I'ev been stopped

1.) Stop in a safe place, with 4 ways on, sometimes Ive spent 30+ seconds finding one

2.) Dome Lights are on and the engine is OFF with the key on the dash.

3.) My glovebox only ever has car information in it, warranty, manual, ownership, registration, insurance, all that fancy fun stuff so I get that BOOK out and plcae it on the dash

4.) I put my hands on the steering wheel

yes at some point I've put the window down.

So lets recap

Cars off, information is out (no need whatsoever to go into a compartment) keys on the dash, and hands are clearly visiible. Not to mention the BRIGHt dome light so the LEO can see all areas of the vehicle.

Respecting, and treating the officer with the utmost respect knowing hes probably used to dealing with asshats and jerks which I am most definitely not.

I'm sure this response is going to cuase a stir, but anyone who wants to talk freedoms and illegal searches **** off.

If you have nothing to hide, who cares.
People want cops doing their job, not eating donuts and the moment they get stopped by that cop ''doing'' his job they start bitching.

Let them do their job. And if you can think of a way to possibly make it safer for them I say go for it. If he gives you shit for going through your car well shit I dont know what to say about that.

Ive been stopped numerous times growing up, often leaving sketchy neighborhoods and other wild places that I really had no major reason being in and in that time I've done the tips and advice that I've posted and more times than not I've walked away with nothing more than a stern warning.

Anyways, I'm done with this thread.
Be safe, don't speed, and remember - He's doing his job. that ''you'' want him to do.

-- After reading what I posted i recognize this is more of a rant --
So in my attempt to keep from smoking, and to further embarrass myself I'm going to stop posting all together in it.

You may not, but the last time I was pulled over they turned on the lights in the middle of a 4 lane hwy that had no shoulder, like i said i acknowledged him and pulled over at the first safe place. I was not going to stop in the middle of the street during rush hour... that would be crazy.. he never said anything about me waiting to pull over either.

No doubt - that would just be insane and dangerous. You absolutely did the right thing. He should have never activated his lights if there is nowhere to pull over safely.

take it from someone who has a slammed truck on 24s, work and lived right outside bad neighboorhoods, and has 1% tint. i get pulled over, yes its expected seeing as i give 100% reason at all times, even when obeying all traffic laws. i could be like the typical guy and bitch and argue and get all upset and say its stupid and not my fault... but if you drive A. something loud B. something very flashy C. something tinted stupid dark- then you SHOULD expect negative attention. 98% of the time if you get pulled over, theres a damn good reason for it. contrary to belief, officers arent here just to ruin your day for no good cause.

i grew up observing people in my family getting pulled over, usually for speeding. i saw how they reacted and how the officer reacted. they ALWAYS got cited, sometimes even given more trouble due to their attitude. and afterwards, they complained and talked about how stupid the police were and so on... this is always driving a plain, no tint vehicle in good condition (nothing suspicious or in violation at all). it clearly showed me how NOT to act. now ive had this truck for over 3 years, been pulled over prob 30 times. i know everyones going to call me an idiot, and why would i have tint like that and so on but- ive been very sick and thats one main reason for my tint. anyways, obviously the approaching officer cant see anything, and its a suspicious looking vehicle (so ive been told lol). almost every time their gun is drawn while approaching. i have no record, plates and all are clean. i am the first and only owner of the vehicle. but like said above, how would you like to walk up on something you cant see in and its occupants more than usually hate what you stand for and do. soon as i stop, all the windows go down, i keep my hands on the wheel after turning the truck off. when they approach, because i am the farthest thing from scary, the guns go away almost instantly. from there on, its up to me- if i have a bad attitude, and show disrespect, you can almost count on a search and a multitude of non-moving violations. now if i choose to understand that this is pretty much all my fault (as with most all stops foir anyone), and show respect that they are just doing their job, i dont get any. i am known in the community down here, and after they check everything (sometimes after just talking for a minute) i am free to go. as soon as i interact cooperatively and respectfully, they do the same. they dont know you, and have no reason to trust you. all my point is, its all about how you carry yourself. sometimes your getting cited no matter what, but it doesnt hurt to always show proper respect. also, since i prob have the darkest tinted thing here, from experience from all types of law enforcement- its NEVER a good idea to reach anywhere, for anything until asked to do so. down here if you did that youd be out of the car before you could get your registration.

It is one thing to pull someone over in traffic with a place to pull over, it is another thing to pull someone over with no place to pull over. I work I-80 as part of my job and doing criminal interdiction. It is 5 lanes of interstate traffic and a pain in the A@$!! That is why I went back to working Midnights!! It is a lot different!! When I stopped somebody during the day, You just have to signal that you are pulling over, and take your time. Please pull over to the right and not the left shoulder!! Anyway, we will clear every lane for you until you get on the right shoulder. If anything happens, it is our fault! Once you get hit with the lights, you are "seized" and we take full responsibility. Hope this helps!!
