Tragic all the way around. Not only for the family of the victims but the lives of the officers and their families are irrevocably damaged as well. Behind the badges they are just regular people like the rest of us and are just as prone to making bad decisions. Definately not making excuses for them, what they did was inexcusable however they experience and deal with the worst that society has to offer, some handle it better than others.

Good friend of mine is an officer here in CA and was promoted to SGT in the juvenile sex crimes division he lasted about 5 years before he couldn't take it anymore and it changed who he is.

Good to hear from you Hylton, we miss ya!

I know cops here that make $10.00/hour. The best paying oin my County start off at 32,000/yr. I am sorry to see this, sorry for the families loss and for the cop who has to live with his stupidity. I have seen a lot of officers let the rush go to their heads. I was one when I was younger just lucky I didn't have anything bad happen when I was stupid.

At least this opens some cops eyes who are members of this forum to follow the basic laws of the road themselves unless dispatched where they need to use their sirens and lights while speeding.
yes miami cops haul ass......i am friends with alot of gables cops and they tell me what alot of thier fellow co workers do and habits. its pretty bad luckily the ones i am friends with dont do that.

IMO, police officers should ALWAYS be held to a higher standard, and incidents like this deserve full punishment. Hope he gets convicted and sent to prison like he deserves, and not get off scott-free.

In my town, when I was in high school, there was a group of kids that were running around TPing houses for homecoming. One of the houses they hit happened to belong to an ATF agent. The agent came out yelling at them, so they jumped in their car and tried to get away. The agent chased them down, forced them to stop, and had them on the pavement AT GUNPOINT. At this point the kids realized the agent was drunk. ATF agent went on trial for the incident, charged with several things (dont remember exactly, DUI, unlawful use of firearm, something along those lines), there were 8 charges total. He got off on EVERY SINGLE CHARGE. From that point on I've had very little faith in the justice system here.

/end rant

So hopefully they will do the right thing in this case and convict this genius.

Doh!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But, ya. It wouldn't have been so bad if he'd been on an wide open interstate with low traffic and a 75 mph speed limit, but at night, with cross roads and businesses and a 40 moh speed limit?

I wasn't that stupid when I was in high school.

It didn't say how long he'd been on the force.

Guess I should sound in from a 10 year veteran. Cops are under payed indeed. Most all have other jobs to pay the bills. As far as this incident. Stupid on both parties. Cop first for speeding. Speed was posted at 40, so without a emergency should of never been going that fast. Second was the vehicle that turned in front of two headlighted vehicles one coming at a high rate of speed. Many people when making a left turn in front of traffic make this mistake see it all the time. The laws state that you must yield the right of way while turning left or right onto another roadway. So based on the principles that are in this incident the teenagers vehicle will show at fault. Even though the Cops vehicle was speeding it is not as much on the varible of the vehicle turning left into the front of the speeding vehicle. I know most cop haters will say that I am taking up for my own. Well thats horse s''t and if you can do it better and sit in a car for 12 hours, deal with everyone's problems, and put your life on the line for such small pay I say join the force today...........

The officer should be prosecuted for his crimes of speeding and reckless driving but thats it. We as officers are being held in the public's eyes as a waste till someone needs us or we make a stupid mistake like this.

Dude, don't be so bitter. You seem to take a few peoples critisism as speaking for all of us.

And I'd say I agree I thought the car turned in front was pushing it but not expecting an oncoming car to be quite as fast as well over double the limit. More fault goes to the officer but some to the kids.

As far as the excuses of being underpaid to put up with all the BS, I'll tell you like I'd tell anyone else in any other proffesion. Get a different job, or deal with it. Nobody holds a gun to your head and says you MUST be a cop. That's why they say it takes a special person to be a LEO.

No I have never been one, but my closest freind is and most of the county are guys I know. They seem to LOVE it. I know my buddy Steve does. He said it's the best job he's ever had. If it's so terrible, try something new. And I do agree that you guys are WAY underpaid.

Well said Lawdog149. It gets old reading about all the cop bashing on the internet, I somehow didn’t expect it on a forum dedicated to Camaro enthusiasts. I guess I am just naïve and would love to see an article about one of the 105 peace officers that have lost their lives in the line of duty so far this year. I will bet the people that are doing the bashing will be the first to call for help in an emergency. Maybe the people that hate all the under paid cops so much can call a drug dealer the next time they are in trouble. Thanks for your service to your community. Stay Safe

Most cops that I have met/known were control freak, high school losers. But we gotta have'em to maintain the peace.

Every leo I know personaly are pretty cool. Ya, I know 'too me' but I've only really met a few a-holes. But like I said previously, they aren't any different than you or me. If their A-holes outside the job then they probably are ON the job. If they are fair OFF the job then they probably are ON the job. Just as soon as I can master the 'perfect' thing, then I'll expect them to be.

The officer in this case should be prosecuted the same way that I would be if it were me. And YES, held to a higher standard. It does make it worse, him being a cop. jmo

I have meet a few crappy cops and most them were on Coronado, CA. They usually go after Military Personnel and people that don't fit the "neighborhood discription". Easy cash if they pull over someone in Militay, guarenteed cash. But never had problems with San Diego PD or CHP.
