The 2023 Lucid Air GT was EPA rated at 516 miles with 19" wheels (which mine has). It was also sold to the original owner with 3-years free charging at ElectrifyAmerica. That 3 years ends tomorrow so I decided to take advantage of the last remaining day of free charging to see what the range readout would be at 100% It estimates 503 miles at 100%.

The 13 mile difference could be due to battery degradation or the guess-o-meter adjusting to my driving style or some combination. In either event, we're talking a 2.5% degradation in 3 years. I'm good with that. Especially since most studies show that after 2 years degradation tends to slow down.

Canada reverts its government market manipulation from the switch back to the carrot.

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/lives...tegy-9.7075235

Quote:
Carney said that Canada will scrap electric vehicle (EV) mandates that would have required 60 per cent of all new cars to be electric by 2030 and 100 per cent by 2035.

Instead, EV incentives for consumers are coming back. The five-year program will give individuals and businesses up to $5,000 when they buy battery electric and fuel EVs, and up to $2,500 for plug-in hybrids.

No, it's still a switch. From the plan;

"Introduce stronger greenhouse gas emission standards that will force manufacturers to have 50% of their sales to be EV's by 2030, 75% of sales by 2035 and 90% of sales by 2040."

So instead of making it "required", it's now, "You won't meet our requirements unless you do as we say." which makes it "required" anyway.

Now THAT is a mandate.

Yeah but consumers get $5000 now, kind of a "plata" for consumers and "plomo" for the OEMs.

From the government of Canada website https://www.canada.ca/en/innovation-...on-vehicl.html

Rationalize emission reductions policies to focus on outcomes that matter to Canadians
The Government of Canada will set a sovereign path to reduce emissions from light-duty vehicles (LDVs), setting the course for the intention of more than doubling the stringency of Canada's greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions standards by 2035. This is expected to drive a 75% EV adoption rate, while providing flexibility in the technologies used to achieve these emission reductions. Canada will leverage new investments in EV production, consumer incentives and charging infrastructure, and will not stop there; it will also pursue the aspirational goal of achieving a 90% EV adoption rate by 2040.

The Government of Canada will repeal the Electric Vehicle Availability Standard (EVAS). In doing so, Canada will rationalize emission reduction policies, focusing on the outcomes that matter to Canadians without placing undue burden on the Canadian industry. In light of rapidly evolving technologies, Canada will review these standards after five years to ensure they remain ambitious and aligned with Canada's overall climate objectives.

I initially thought the use of the term light duty vehicle exempted half ton trucks. According to google a half ton truck is a light duty vehicle though. But there are several key words in there that express good intentions while sort of recognizing the adoption rate isn't what had been predicted. "without placing undue burden on the Canadian industry" is a notable one.

Now that is NOT a mandate. It's a strict set of requirements that automakers can figure out on their own the best way to comply.

In the US, half-ton trucks are included in the Light Duty Fleet, Three-quarter ton trucks are considered Medium Duty Passenger Vehicles (MDPV) and beyond that vehicles are considered either Medium Duty (Class 3 - Class 5) or Heavy Duty (Class 6 - 8). Could be that Canada uses the same definitions.

They will need to probably get more cars elsewhere then because Americans which have a bigger consumer base than Canada are dictating as of right now anyway what is produced. Manufacturers have already went back on their EV plans losing money on it. They aren't going to budge at a country that has less population than one or two states in the US. No offense to Canadians just a majority rule kind of thing although they will probably have EVs they can sell in Canada. The Auto market is between a rock and a hard place right now in North America due to consumer demand and politicians not seeing eye to eye.

True, but all OEMs are still producing EVs and introducing more EVs into the market. At a slower pace than was the case a year ago, but they are still introducing new EV product. Selling 10% of that into Canada helps support their business case.

You are not wrong. But when several governments are laying out incentives to go faster, go faster they will. Now they gotta pump the brakes. But they are not shifting into park.

Case in point... https://www.autoblog.com/news/ford-t...rst-sneak-peek
