This looks fun...

Dodge Charger Daytona RT vs Tesla Model Y at Las Vegas Speedway. FWIW, there are faster versions of each car.

More of an indictment of the ability of a 19 year old to make rational choices than the practicality of an EV.

While people do need to do their homework, salesmen should at least get a basic idea from their customers if they’re ready to adapt to EV.

One of my big issues as about any EV is simply charging - fueling - feasibility.

Unless and until every EV in a reasonable price range (and God knows what that is anymore anyways when a damn base Civic starts at almost $30k and a V6 Bronco 2 door is now $80,000!!!!) can recharge anywhere, at any time, and in under 10 minutes go from less than 10 miles remaining on the charge to 300 miles, EVs are NOT for the mass market of America.

Just spent a little bit of time reviewing vehicle deliveries and registrations for a client. Found this a little bit interesting. Wish I could build tables in this website…

Vehicle January February March
Mustang 2,399 2,792 4,186
Mach E 3,529 3,312 4,766
Equinox EV 2,439 3,033 4,857
Cybertruck 3,880 2,619 2,242
Model Y 48,891 24,444 22,418

So what’s the point?
  • Mustang Mach E continues to outsell Mustang despite the controversy over the name.
  • Equinox EV has caught up with and passed the Mach E in terms of sales of similar size and content EVs.
  • Cybertruck appears to be cooling off. Maybe everyone who wants one has one? This is typical of radically designed products. Plymouth Prowler? Chevy SSR?
  • Model Y is cooling off a lot. Could be transition from original model to newly released Gen 2 (Juniper) Model Y? Could be pushback against the Doge-Meister? Could be more options on the table than this time last year? All of the above?

Your thoughts on the Teslas sound reasonable.
-The Nox EV passing the Mach E could be because it's marketed closer to the appliance archetype and is a fresher design.
-Both might be up as a front run to avoid tariffs.
-The Mustang is a flawed product, but would be helped if it got a $7500 tax credit too.
-I can actually imagine happening, a strong R. party checkers move that: passes a change of the $7500 EV tax credit to a $7500 made-in-usa tax credit (-% foreign content or double for China).

Mach E does not qualify for the IRA credit. For a couple years it qualified for half of the credit ($3,750). But the credit was designed to favor vehicles that do not source battery minerals and components from countries like China. The % of material required to be sourced from friendly countries increases every year to the point where Mach E does not qualify for 2025. So Mustang vs Mach E comparison is apples to apples in terms of pricing. No advantage for Mach E.

People tend to assume that all EVs qualify for the IRA credit. Most do not. Other than through the leasing loophole and I am shocked that this loophole has not been closed yet.

The MachE was heavily discounted the Mustang was not

Nope. Not true at all. There may or may not be special discounting done at regional sales level, but on the national scale, company discounts are the same for 2025 vehicles and potentially more for Mustang than Mach E for remaining 2024 models. There is at least overlap.

At the end of the day it’s not an apples to apples comparison to compare ICE mustang sales to Mach E sales. Why? Because even if they had the exact same powertrain one is a coupe and one is a crossover. The crossover will always outsell the coupe. Heck even I just bought a crossover for my wife and a truck for myself. Things I never thought I’d do haha.

Yes. Absolutely incomparable vehicles other than the fact they have 4 rubber tires.

Absolutely 100% totally true. I've said the same myself more times than I can count. But still people talk about the Mach E as "Ford's replacement for the Mustang" and hate on Ford for "replacing the Mustang with an appliance". That's usually followed by "nobody wants these things...they'll never sell," and so on. Point is, no matter what you call the thing, a mid-sized crossover will and should outsell a performance coupe. Period. And clearly it is not a replacement for the Mustang coupe because the Mustang coupe is still available.

This is an interesting video.Edmunds U-Drags are always pretty interesting. At least to me they are. I was a bit surprised that these two weren't a little closer, though.

I don't think people realize the Charger is Hellcat/ZL1 speed and braking is pretty darn good on it. Now it is heavy for sure but pretty fast.
