“One final thought Dodge should have realized that beside the very small percentage of enthusiasts like us no one give a shit about performance. If the public did then the Camaro would be outselling the Challenger 10:1 considering every single comparable model is both faster and handles better than the Challenger. No one cares how fast their EV is and they never will.“

Spot on.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder of course, but if they made the EV version more aesthetically similar to what they’ve been selling forever, it might help bridge the gap, but of course bad aero = less range. There are others in this thread that like it.

I’m bitter about the whole mess. Once I get my V8 stowed away in the garage, a good portion of that bitterness will pass.

I watched the unveil because I thought it was going to be cool even though I was skeptical based on your info. It was not.
I was quite disappointed too. The stuff I read in the embargoed press release had me thinking it would come off a lot better than it did. For example, the press release talked about a natural sound that would be generated from the airflow under the vehicle at speed and channeled back into the cabin. I did not expect to see (or hear) the pseudo-Hemi manufactured noise they highlighted in the video. Not impressed. I also expected better explanation of the “multi-speed” transmission. Does multi mean more than two? They didn’t come close to explaining it. Is it like the 2-speed in the Taycan, but with more than two speeds, or is it “manufactured shift points” like in Nissan DCTs? We may never know. Here’s how they described it in the presser…

Unlike typical BEVs, the Dodge brand’s eRupt multi-speed transmission with electro-mechanical shifting delivers distinctive shift points, throwing shoulders into seat backs in true Dodge style.

Sounds like an actual multi-speed transmission, which would be a game-changer for EVs. Now I’m not sure what it is.

Too busy cruising Woodward after the unveil.

The Woodward Dream Cruise “officially” starts Saturday, but it’s really been under way all week. When I turned onto Woodward I was immediately behind a C8 Z06, a CT5V Blackwing, and a Ferrari 488 Pista.

Anyway, I was also very much underwhelmed by the release. I had seen pics and had an embargoed press release that had me thinking it would be more than it turned out to be. I’ll be shocked if they don’t just flush the entire manufactured sound thing.

I think it would be too costly and inefficient to add a transmission to an EV. Tesla looked a this early on and it was ruled out an unnecessary. When people argued it could help performance like in the Taycan, they said oh yeah, watch this tri-motor Plaid rip 9 sec 1/4 miles runs with no transmission. Eventually you will see a drive unit on each wheel and then LSD/E-Diffs will be a thing of the past.

My guess is they will have a mode where you can simulated the swell of torque and the pause to simulated a gear shift but I am not sure how well this will go over. The benefit of an EV is its square wave torque curve so why do anything to introduce pauses and simulated shifts. If it is actually mechanical and more engaging then so be it but I think it will more of gimmick.

You are correct. Europe has regulations for panel and projected surface radii. Years ago GM put a bezel around the door handle for this reason in order to export a car.

The US does have Pedestrian Protection requirements for the front end. To over simplify, this has led to higher front ends to get the hood away from engine structure for head impact.

They can do that today on your ICE car why would they do it in the future on an EV?

Last week one of the local news stations did a super over-blown report on how pickups are getting huge and the grilles are getting flat and tall and posing an extreme hazard to pedestrians. I remarked to my wife that the tall, flat grilles and high hood lines are specifically due to pedestrian protection requirements. They are designed that way to keep pedestrian’s heads from slamming onto the hood and pushing through to impact the engine. Then I reached for the remote and changed the channel.

Because it could increase your home energy costs from 300/month to 600/month.

Prior to EV if you drive a gas guzzler you are paying for the cost of that, now you are effecting people cost to just live. I expect there will be legislation on this, before folks didn’t care.

Also, have you been on the road lately? These Karens drive scared AF. They will be terrified with more and quicker cars on the road.
Ironically, Teslas have a "Chill" mode that reduces the power quite a bit.

The things about EVs is yes they are quick but they are also silent and traction control and stability control is all locked down. So, while they are quick they do so effortlessly. My ZL1 takes a lot more restraint and skill to drive than the quicker Model 3 Performance did. I was actually annoyed with how a car like the Model 3 Performance could have 500lb ft of instant torque but you can't spin the tires or kick the rear out.

The interior look pretty good but it is still a concept car.
