I'm pretty sure the ecu adjusts to octane from what's coming in and pulls timing as needed as well as tries to keep the power.
BMW once explained how modern cars try to produce close to the advertised power dealing with air density, octane, etc. Fuel tables have been shown to only be timing algorithms. Algorithms adjust everything according to knock and so on. You guys seriously think tables are end all of octane? There's so many factors even within "93" which isn't always exactly 93, or "High octane" . Fuel is so imperfect within batches and 93 is not required. Today engines are over engineered, electronics take care of these discrepancies. |

to a point electronics can compensate but it won't compensate for 87.

Premium gas. Don’t cheap out. Either 91 or 93, whatever is available in your area.

Question 1: Should I use premium gas?
Answer: Yes. The manufacturer recommends it and they know their shit. Question 2: Should I follow break-in procedure like the manufacturer recommends? Answer: No. Do a burnout at first startup. The manufacturer don't know shit. |

I personally use TopTier 93 octane only in mine. It's a weekend and track car for me, driven maybe 3000 miles per year. According to the owner's manual, however, you can use 87 and it will not hurt the car. Quote from page 25 of the 2018 manual: "Use premium 93 octane unleaded gasoline in your vehicle. Unleaded gasoline with an octane rating as low as 87 may be used, but it will reduce performance and fuel economy."

What I have learned over many gas threads is that its RECOMMENDED to use Premium but it is not required.
People saying you are ruining your engine and it will blow up are over exaggerating. It does little damage if any. If you are just using it as a commute car and is usually in traffic then reg is fine. If you are using it for racing/track purposes get premium. |

Big part of tunning a car is literally listening for knock.
Knock depends on your fuel. Literally pushing as hard as you can before you knock, and blow something up, that's tuning. Or in reverse, use 87 octane and pull back timing and go as easy as you can, and it won't blow up your engine. These cars are self tuning using fuel mapping algorithms. Literally says in the manual, you can use 87 and you won't hurt the car. It's not fair to say, no use only 91 and go on about people not being able to afford or are irresponsible with their cars. I can afford 91 all the time, cool. Maybe someone can't spend those extra $9 once. Or something else , but it's not ok for people who dont even read their cars manual to exert themselves right to matters. |
