The funny thing about these types of articles is that you can sway results just by polling in different Geographical locations.

Honestly guys, the majority of you sound about like the type the article describes.

1) The writer did not do the research. He reported on the research.
2) The research company is based in California. Part of their research included data from the car dealerships themselves.
3) They list a source from another unbiased research company. You could do the research on them if you felt they were being unbiased.

My thoughts:

The research they report certainly does make sense. I have no trouble believing that most college educated people buy Honda's. I have no doubt believing that most uneducated people buy domestics. For the study to have validity, it should make sense, and on the surface, this one does make sense to me.

Tons of information, good information, over the past two decades has stated that domestics make an inferior car in comparison to the japanese car. Educated people read this and make their purchases according to this information. Just the way things are.

The author, particularly, in the last paragraph, does make a slam on domestic buyers, which may be a sign of a personal bias on his part, or it could be his lame attempt at humor, but it certainly doesn't mean that the article he reported is wrong.

The study is a broad study and doesn't encompass auto enthusiasts. Most car buyers don't buy cars for the reasons we do. They buy for reliability, utility and praticality.

You are taking this reactively and defensively, and instead of thinking through the article you are just reacting emotionally.

I have a domestic car. I bought it because I bought it at a great value to me, based on the things that I want in a car. I also realize that domestic cars have gotten better in most recent years. I understand that the market hasn't made that correction yet, and because of that, I can buy domestic cars significantly cheaper than I can foreign cars. I leverage that to my advantage when getting the car that I want. This may not be the way that most people do it, but this is the way that I do it.

In essence, smart people can and do buy domestics and dumb people can overpay for japanese cars that they might not really like, but only bought because the research said it was better.

It's just an article that speaks over a broad category and doesn't apply specifically to how you think, so do yourself a favor and quit posting dumb replies to it on the website, because you will end up looking as you perceive the article sounding.

Interesting first post Vee8 and welcome to the forum, did you join the forum just to post that? Why try and tell others not to post their feelings in response to the article? Why are you calling the replies dumb, you have made it kind of personal yourself haven't you?

My favourite part is how the article says it's better to drive a 'subtle Bentley" instead of a Red Ferrarri if you run a company that is laying off lots of people.

Yeah cause my uneducated domestic loving brain can't tell that a Bentley is an expensive car either.

I wish I would have went to Yale like the author so I could tell the difference.

And Vee8, welcome to the boards! Nice first post!

You have a good point, but I just want to say, it's hard to not react emotionally when a guy basically calls you an idiot for owning the car you do. But yeah we could probably all lighten up a bit

No man. I disagree. If you're telling me that this article is appropriate, then you need to read it again.

I think I know when I'm being made fun of, and when I'm not. Even if this is the author's bad attempt at humor, it's the kind of humor that slides down his nose before it lands on your head. Nobody likes to be the butt of a joke, even at a party. This is a publication, viewable worldwide. I don't find it funny, and I think I am fully justified in being angry. Yahoo should know better.

Thanks for your two cents though, I think that was the longest first post ever.

I am not arguing whether the article is appropriate or not. That doesn't matter to me. I was just saying that the article *seems* factual.

If the author did an article on the demographics of buyers who buy cars that go less than 14 seconds in the 1/4 mile, he would probably have found evidence that those people spend more time on the internet than the previous study. He may have found that they also spend more on their cars, or that they have more Lynerd Skynerd CD's, or that they wash their cars more often.....any number of things.

Is it *really* so hard to believe that higher educated people buy Honda's more often that less educated people? I don't think so.

I do agree that the humor/slam at the end of the article wasn't needed and only took away from the content of the article.

Let me say this....I bought my domestic car for several reasons over a foreign car:

1) Honda/Toyota doesn't make a thing I like
2) They are over priced, in my opinion, in relationship to domestic cars.

Let me say this, too. I don't care in the least about car companies, because i know that they don't give a tinker's damn about any of us, and there is tons of evidence that shows this, based on their indifference through the years of the consumer, and the only reason they are making their cars better now is because of the dollar....this is the only thing that any car company cares about, so I don't feel the love/loyalty towards these companies like some of you do, so I don't find offense in chevy/ford or any company being bashed. I feel no sense of loyalty to any company and buy only what benefits me.

You all bought what you liked, I hope, because you liked it and no other car company made it. Each of you are comfortable with the reliability/resale of what you bought. You made an educated choice, based on what you wanted. AS A GROUP, we may not be as smart as other buyers of vehicles, but our needs are different than the other buyers, but the article didn't really assess that, so why be offended? That's what I guess I am missing.

Thanks for the welcome here. I read this site often and like the camaro, and if they hadn't wanted to sell to me at MSRP and HIGHER, I would have one today.

You're missing the entire gist of the article. You seem to think that we are insulted for Chevrolet.

This article doesn't target the automakers, but the people that patronize them. It is a blatant attack on our taste and intelligence. It's an uncalled-for and a completely opinionated spin on some unnamed study. The facts aren't displayed- we are forced to take the writer's word for it, which leads me to believe that some facts have been left out from the beginning. The message is clear. Don't buy American. Smart, tasteful, interesting people buy elsewhere. PS, people that choose Chevy are morons.

Nah. If you can't understand why this would be insulting, then there's not much else I can say.

Oh, and MSRP is a pretty damned good price. Let me know who was gonna give you that price on a new Camaro, so I can pay them a visit.

I think the article could have made the piont without name-calling. That was gratuitous and really uncalledfor. It makes the author seem petty and spils any argument he may have been trying to make.

This is a pretty silly debate anyway. Where does it say that people who go to college are smarter than those who do not. It could be that the typical honda owners are morons in the demographic that goes to college and gets a useless degree and is now a greeter at Wal*mart.

Meanwhile, the guy who bought the domestics was from a demographic that couldn't afford to send him to college (or spend it on outrageous "preventative" maintenance on an import) so he skipped college and started running a lansdscaping business and is now buying a ZR-1 Corvette with his lack of a degree...

I don't see it as insulting. I think it's true. magazines report for the past 15 years that foreign cars are better. People with higher education tend to read and study things more. They read that the foreign cars are better and have higher reliability ratings, and thus, they buy more foreign cars. This makes perfect sense to me.

If I were doing research on this topic this would be the exact outcome I would expect to happen. I would have guessed that Ford/chrysler/GM buyers are less educated than Honda/Toyota buyers.

The only issue where I think any of us would be angered is how these "smart" people who buy Japanese cars will read things like this and continue to have snob arrogance regarding their purchase. I work with a lot of highly intelligent people and they probably see my domestic car and wonder why I was dumb enough to buy a less reliable car, but the thing is, they don't use/value a car in the same manner that I do. They want different things than I do. The car that I bought, for the price that I wanted, has everything that I want....no other car company other than a domestic company had what I wanted.

A study says that less educated people eat at mcdonald's more than college educated people. I have no trouble believing that, but I might want to eat at mcdonald's more because I work across from the restaurant. It benefits me more to eat there than to drive somewhere else and lose time off my lunch. Just because, ON AVERAGE, people are less edcucated, it doesn't mean that YOU are.
