RWD and AWD

Somethings on my mind, which is better AWD or RWD, .....to narrow things, lets say you have a 500 HP V8 engine with a six-speed, for better proformence which drivetrains are better, AWD or RWD ?

Well the jeep srt performs better than the others due to the AWD because it puts more power to the ground. It weights more though :(.

AWD hands down!

I've been asking for this from day one.

Depends on conditions. In the wet or other loose traction conditions, AWD wins. In the dry, the weight and yaw control advantage of RWD trumps.

if your car is balanced properly then def RWD... race cars use rwd...... i would never buy a fwd or fwd based awd system... its just wimpy...

example... the weight excess doesnt help awd.... people dont understand... that your "losing" torque to the fronts... ... however in theory rwd WILL be faster... awd may be faster due to better grip.... even on prepped tracks awd way grip more to drop it in later... but on a track road course... i would much rather the rwd poise and awd cars never turn in quick enough...

im going with rwd

AWD is great for control. It is hard to argue that there is anything better for that, including a talented driver.

On the other hand, RWD is better for dry weather.

Where you live and how you drive determines what is better for you.

if you want to do a burnout, go with rwd. if you don't want to be spining your tires go awd.

The weight and understeer that AWD have compared to RWD, in my opinion, do not trump RWD.

When you use the front tires for acceleration AND turning, you have to sacrifice one for the other (you can't use 100% of tire friction for turning and 100% for accel, you have to split the friction between the two)...

all of the highest pefromance cars in the world are rwd... except veyron and r35 gtr... there is basically no other... everything else is rwd......

just think about this ... what would you rather go into a race with?

my 350z was amazing for corners... ive drivin porches awd and rwd

and the rwd imo just has more...oomph i guess... and balance... and it just feels more natural

There is some fairly interesting discussion on the BMW boards (the 335 can be had with RWD or AWD). The consensus seems to be that the

The AWD will
  • Launch harder
  • Make you feel warm & fuzzy when it snows

The RWD will
  • Have better road feel & cornering (less unsprung weight and better balance)
  • get slightly better mileage
  • beat AWD from a rolling start (lighter & lower drive line losses)
  • Allow you to "drift"
