First day back for Monique yesterday under "restrictions". She has been cleared for 60% lifting though we didn't go that high yesterday. Just 185lb deadlift and 175 box squat. But she is happy to being doing that again.

She is hoping in 3 weeks to be fully cleared which would make it a 3 month recovery from surgery which is unheard of.

7 month bump lol.

Well I have good news and bad news.

Good news is the Crossfit Open has started and Monique is off to a good start. Anyone else on here doing the open?

Bad news....

Approx 2 weeks ago I suffered my first real injury in 31 years. I tore my pec in what appears to be 2 spots. Was doing close grip bench with 380. First rep flew up (was going to do 4) 2nd rep about 1/2 way up (not straining going right up) and pop. No forewarning, no pain, just pop. Luckily the weight was over my chest and not my neck/face as it just fell. I had a spotter but there's really no "catching" 380 in a free fall.

I am actually "hurt"...not just the normal aches and pains from lifting. Sucks. Still getting opinions......

Sorry to hear this, I know that really hurts physically and especially mentally. I am still training my crew pretty good. Got my female trainee benching 175 lbs and here deads and squats are ridiculously good. Her husband is pulling over 700 lbs and looking strong for some powerlifting this year. Me, I still push, but not as hard and especially now I'm professional wrestler on weekends.

Keep us posted man, I can truly feel for you and know that pain.

Yeah the physical part I can deal with. The mental aspect of it is f...ing me up.

Just got a text from the ortho....it's looking like surgery

Yes and no. I hit 344 reps on Sunday using the 50 for the hc&j, but did straight leg raises because I haven't tried ttb since my hip surgery. Since October I've rowed more than 3000m/day 4-5 days a week. I kept my pace between 1050 and 1250 cal/hour and 22spm. Thanks to all that volume I pretty much walked off the rower at the 20 minute mark.

That's awesome. Same thing happened with Monique yesterday when she re-did the workout. She finished at 316 on Friday....330 yesterday finishing the row in the 11th round as time expired.

After 18.1 she is sitting 133rd worldwide in the 40-44 masters division needing to finish in the top 200 to qualify for the masters regionals. Pretty happy considering at 5'2" rowing is not her "thing" although she has made improvements.

That's pretty sick. Hopefully she continues to be well prepared for the remaining four weeks.

If she's looking to make improvements specifically on the rower, direct her towards Pete's Beginner Plan (on my phone so I can't link right this second). I only followed it for nine of the 24 weeks but in that time it took my 500m pace down four seconds and my 2000m down more than 17.

Thanks. Going to be tougher this year as she is at the upper end (44) of the bracket but we will see. It ultimately depends on what workouts come next.

Will do. Always looking for ideas to improve on things. She is fortunate that we live and Cookeville and she trains at Mayhem so there's a wealth of knowledge there. And specifically to rowing, Bob Franks is a member (google him-he's big in the "rowing scene") and has helped her a lot.

She's probably in good hands, haha.

Having torn both pecs more than once and my left bicep, if it is the muscle belly that is torn there is nothing surgical you can do. If the tendon detached, it can be surgically reattached. Trying to sew muscle bellies together is like sewing steak together. It won't last.

Once the pain goes down a little, get massage, ART, Graston or your soft tissue modality of choice going. It will work wonders and help minimize and possibly eliminate scar tissue.

Also, try this:

I used this a month or two ago after my last tear (a minor one compared to a couple I've had) and it really helped me get back quickly.

Thanks but it’s not the muscle belly. It’s the distal insertional tendon and it’s torn at the sternal and abdominal head of the pec.

That sucks. After your surgery, look into peptides to promote healing.
