I think it's a tad too early to say so, but the similarities are there. If Marino is the comparison, I think Stafford is probably the best current QB in the league for that comparison.

And in fairness, Marino never had to deal with the level of ineptness that is called the Detroit Lions....

Marino played 17 years 61,361 yards, average 3609 yards/season TD-420
INT-252 overall career rating 86.4

Matthew Stafford 9 years 34426 yards average 3825 yards/season TD-213
INT-118 overall career rating so far 88.0.

They are really close. I don't think any NFL team wouldn't want either of them on their roster during their NFL careers. Marino did have the benefit of a few decent running backs as well, while Stafford hasn't. Helps the passing game to be able to run as well.

What a sly fox Bill Belichick is, gets James Harrison as soon as the Steelers let him go. He has to know their defense really well for all the years he has played with them, and being the Steelers are their biggest threat in the AFC that could stop them from going to the SB, this is a great edge to have. One smart cookie!

You CANNOT compare numbers between two different eras of football. The rules are completely different. Marino would be on another level in the current league. Stafford cant touch Marino’s jock strap. That’s just absurd. LOL. Never once will you ever hear “Stafford is one of the best pure passers in the NFL, right up there with Marino”. Ever.

Not saying Stafford is bad, but not anywhere near Marino level.

What rule has drastically changed that affects the amount of yards a QB averages per game? What rule has drastically changed the amount of TD's and INT's a QB averages? What rule has drastically changed how they rate a QB? There aren't any!

Stafford is the highest paid player in the NFL, just like Marino was when he played, for the same reason. The stats tell the truth, and when comparing them, they are very close.

Stafford cant touch Marino's jock strap? His JR year in HS he could throw the ball 75 yards! No 16 year old kid has EVER been able to do this! He has the strongest arm in the NFL.

Marino never won a SB, and only made it to 1. Stafford has 8 more years to play as long as Marino did, and with a better OL and a decent RB, and one great receiver, he could EASILY reach the SB.

Of course if your a Miami fan, Marino is GOD when it comes to QB's and no one will ever be that good even if they have almost identical stats.

This series shows all you need to see about Stafford. 1 minute, no timeouts, 80 yards needed for a TD to win. 3 perfect darts. Game over.

When Elway played for the Broncos they couldn't win the SB until they got Terrell Davis (RB), and 1 decent receiver, and a couple better OL players. This is all Detroit needs as well.

Marino always had Shula, Stafford has had a parade of clowns as head coaches, no running game and no pro bowl o-linemen.

Dan Marino is the best to ever throw a football period.
