Yes it was, but no one wants to acknowledge that and no one wants to pay attention to the fact that even Randy running the same car on different days gets lap times a few seconds off of each other and yet they want to use this as the definitive answer to which is faster on a track.
No one is saying that the SS 1LE isn't a capable car and if I had to spend my own money it would be the SS 1LE over the 5th gen Z/28. though people are making the mistake of selling the Z/28 Camaro short which I think is a mistake. |

If you watch the Z/28 ring time you will notice that at the end it started to rain and the driver had to back off even on the straights.

All you guys that keep referencing VIR lightning lap times for the final time THEY DON'T USE THE SAME DRIVER EVERY TIME. 1LE could've got a shit driver and Z may have had an ACE. Maybe the other way around, who knows, but the times aren't near as worthy of a reference as the MT BDC hot laps. That being said obviously both cars are great! One may perform better on a shorter technical track where the other may run better on a long HP track.
Bottom line is the Z/28 still costs more used than most new 1SS 1LE's. The 1LE has newer tech and better chassis that will have a higher performance ceiling if you are the modding type. If you are into nameplates and unicorn factor then get the Z/28. If you want the most car for your money get the 1LE. This whole thread is about value. To me the value is the 1LE. I think people who aren't fanboys of one side or the other can honestly agree with that. I shopped Z/28's while waiting for the release of the 6th gen 1LE. I know each car inside an out and I have zero regrets about choosing the 1LE.

I test drove a 2015 z/28 with 500 miles and a 2017 ss 1le back to back and chose the 1le. I loved both but for a mixed use vehicle the maintenance item costs for the 1le made more fiancial sense. I love the ls7... but couldnt justify it.

Having the ls7 was the number one reason i wanted the Z28 , i won't forget turning the key and feeling and hearing that thing startup . If chevy done anything with building the Z28 it was that they matched a legend by building a legend . The Z28 was hard to pass up but i have no regret just because the 1le is the future and took advantage of modern technology, and puts it to work in a great way.

The SS1LE is IMHO the best bang for the buck for dual duty track and street machine money can buy. Is it as good as a Z28 at running on the track? NO! Is it insanely close for the money? YES!

I bolded the most important words for you. This is the problem with our country. Americans don't want an all purpose fast car. Instead we want a moderately-fast-grocery-getter-kid-hauler. I am wondering how many Lamborghini or Ferrari owners say but for a mixed use vehicle and maintenance item costs?
