Will we see a Chevy SS with the ZR1 LS9?
... I hope so.

Almost bought one before the ZL1. I would be in for one with FI, a proper oil cooler, Recaros and 6 Pistons up front.

And those 1000 cars represent 3 to 4 months of SS sales. Through to August this year, they've only sold 2148 SS's. Last year it was 2199.

The name is dumb and they've done nothing to market it.

You'd sell a bunch to hardcore performance enthusiasts, which doesn't represent a large amount of sales. And keep in mind this isn't a ZR1 Corvette, it's a car that in all honesty doesn't have much exposure to the general public. Half the people out there think it's just a Malibu. And in any case, if there was to be a VF Commodore with an LS9, there's a pretty good chance it would be an HSV, not a Holden. And technically speaking HSV =/= GM.

HSV is a separate company from GM. If they want to take GM Holden-sourced Commodores and stick LS9s in them, they can do so. It's no different than a performance shop in the US taking an SS and putting an LS9 in it. But the chances of seeing a GM factory built Commodore with an LS9 are slim.

An LS9 powered SS sedan would likely be an absolute minimum price of 70 grand, probably over 80 if it has to be done through an aftermarket shop. How many people do you think would be willing to spend that kind of money on a Chevy sedan when they could get either a Hellcat Charger for a lot less, or a CTS-V for a little more? Or just get a regular SS sedan supercharged, with more than enough money left over to just straight up buy a brand new LS3 in case that one blows. Again, this is keeping in mind that fewer than 3000 people each year decide to buy a regular SS. Fens point is that Holden (and therefore GM) isn't putting LS9s into Commodores. The manufacturer has nothing to do with the engine upgrade. They just provide the rest of the car (and a now surplus LS3).

Isn't NASCAR a big part of why there is any kind of SS?....Obviously sales numbers are very low...Probably any other model would have been discontinued long ago with those sales numbers...
Without the SS what would Chevy have for NASCAR?....If it's going to be built in stupid low numbers, and a high price to boot, why not put an LS9 in it?.. |
