How about you pick up a book called "Code of Criminal Procedure" and learn a thing or 2. The things we do are backed by the State's laws & Federal Laws. If you didn't know already, Federal Laws encompass a set standard ruling for every state to Follow. State laws are a continuation of the federal laws fine tuned to govern its citizens but no state law can overrule a federal law. Here's some homework for you, read up on the laws of detention and let me know what you find.

I don't know everything, nor does any officer. We learn constantly every day. So if I'm wrong about any of this, I hope one of my brother/sister officer's on here will correct me

Hey Broncosman...

I am in Houston, and appreciate everything HPD does to help keep the city safe. My worry... not that the officer knows the chase will have to stop if it is unsafe, but that the people running know that also. This kind of gives them the "hey if I can go fast enough and long enough they will drop back"...

With the chase we had the other day here, he seemed to be going awful fast, and I worried about what might happen the whole time...

Again, we respect and appreciate the dedication of all of our fine police officers, not just in Houston but everywhere!!!

We did have a couple wild chases here last week. The one where the guy jumped off the 3rd level of the parking garage ended up in Broncosman's backyard...

Just reading his post on the stop Sat night scares the hell out of me.

I've only glanced through this thread and noticed some cop bashing-I say so what...I've learned to live with that, it is part of the job...but I do think people who do this are just ignorant of what the job is all about (not saying they are ignorant) and only understand it from what they see on tv or hear in music, maybe from what happened to a friend or personal experiences on a traffic stop and I bet on that stop, as long as they kept their cool they only recieved what they deserved if anything, and nothing more. If you don't know...most officers know what would cause complaints or discipline or even criminal charges and wouldnt jeopardize their families or their own well-being just because you called them out of their name.
I just tell people I have conversations with who think along these lines that they are welcome to come down and go on a ride-along anytime they want. My 2 cents.

If your pulled over theres an extremely good chance the copper has already seen you do something to warrant a stop and write a ticket. So he can write you a ticket. He is within his rights

How you play it depends on whether he writes that ticket or not. If your a dick with an attitude your chances are extremely good he will just write the ticket and get you on your way. If your respectful theres a chance he will listen to you and either warn you or give you a ticket for a lesser amount or smaller charge.

Keep in mind everyday people are dicks to Officers for the simple fact that they are Officers no more ...no less. Thats fine I undertsand that that there are people out there like that. You have the right to be not like the law. But officers have the power to enforce the law and issue anything from warnings to tickets to arresting you for the offence you committed.

Imagine your an Officer and you pull someone over for speeding their doing 78 in a 55 mph zone. You get to the vehicle and the first words out of the persons mouth are "Fcuk you just write me the ticket and fcuk off". What would you do. Are you going to say "Sorry Sir I see your having a bad day why not be on your way we will forget this ever happened ?"

Should your attitude and responses have merit on if you get a ticket or not? No, they really shouldn't. But by that logic, you should get a ticket every time you break the law, even a little. Its just common sense that being pleasant and respectful will go a long ways in keeping you from getting a ticket.

Its been awhile since I've been pulled over, but the last time that I was here was a list of what I did wrong:
Speeding 75 in a 55 (while passing, I still think that one is stupid)
Failure to signal going out for the pass (I did signal coming back in, I must not have pressed the signal hard enough while going out)
Rear liscense plate was unlight (bulbs had burned out w/out my knowledge)
Expired Sticker
DL address did not match current address

Here's what I did:
Roll down all the windows
Turn on all cab lights
Those were so the officer could more clearly see into the car and feel less at risk
Speak in a kind, curteous, and honest manner
I did not ask for a break

Result:
Written warning for all offenses
Everthing was cleared up in the next 3 days.

Was the officer being kind to me? Absolutely. Was I lucky? Maybe somewhat, but I still believe that by not acting like a jerk, I certainly helped his kind actions along.

I'm not an officer, but I give them alot of respect. I try to do that with everyone. Try it sometime, its a heck of a lot nicer way to live.

P.S. - I have no front license plate on my Camaro. I hope that if I am pulled over my kind words will keep me from getting a ticket, but it will be certainly within the officers rights to write me up anyways.

Any form of a common courtesy is accepted, you dont have to use someone's name to greet them. Besides, if they are doing their job correctly, you wouldnt see our name unless you stuck your head out the window.

Not necessarily...there are many Feds who have been duly authorized by state Govenors to enforce state laws (which allow for traffic stops, for example), as well as many local guys, like me, who have been duly authorized to enforce federal laws (working with the DEA or FBI on a case, for example).

We do it all the time here in the Memphis area...I would assume the same for you in the Atlanta area. It only makes sense and allows for opportunities for the officer or the fed depending on where they want to end up in life :-)
