Regarding the hood, it's the scoop (and pins and such) that is rice on the Neon. The hood is just a hood without that scoop (and without the pins and such).
I've never liked that style of 3rd gen spoiler. Back when they were new, the ricer issue didn't exist (the closest term at the time, "rice burner", merely described the place where the car was manufactured). I agree about your wheel example. That fits the exception I mentioned for tacky wheels, as well as the fundamental concept of functionality or lack thereof -- in this case, actually reducing functionality. I'd hate driving something like that, as I said about nonfunctional wheels. The upsizing of wheels is itself rooted in performance modifications, but style has long since overrun any handling gains available from such a strategy. I also agree that spoilers are non-functional, which is why I said that they're non-functional. The ones that don't attempt to resemble anything used for racing and are understated tend not to seem ricey to most people, myself included.

are these scoops rice? ![]() what about this scoop? ![]() the hood on the 2010 camaro has a cowl to it. however, the intake draws its air from behind the headlight. so the new camaro's hood cowl is rice as well right?

You can throw as many Camaro examples at me as you want; I will not hesitate to tell it as it is. I love the Camaro, and my love includes accepting its failures and such. I'd be a hypocrite if I didn't accept when something was rice just because it is found on my favorite car.

rice to me, is when it is over the top. just like people who build trailer queens. I saw a 69 camaro with a blown motor pushing 700hp at a recent car show. the whole car was a tube chassis car with a narrowed rear and slicks, full built suspension and trans. full custom paint job, along with chrome accents all over the motor. I asked the guy what his 1/4 time was... he told me he never raced it. do I consider that rice? no. just a waste of money.

Agreed. It's (approximately) functional, just unused.
For me, it doesn't have to be over the top to be rice. If it's rice but not over the top, then it's just minor rice.

to him it does. I'm not bashing his opinion either, just trying to open his mind a little.

Milk will you just ban both of you from this thread. I've always enjoyed it until this. Swap phone numbers or e-mails and get back to us when you two have reached a verdict on what constitutes a ricer. Thanks

It seems we've pretty well completed the discussion. I have nothing more to add based on anything Spike has posted, and it looks like Spike has thoroughly explained his criteria/opinions too.
Quote:
Whether they qualify the whole car as "riced out", I'm not so sure...when I say "riced out" I usually mean a car that is more extreme -- either having rice elements that are more extreme, or having a larger quantity of ricey elements. The gills and mail slot are somewhat understated and less obtrusive than common rice. The gills aren't actually cut into slots, nor are they painted a different color or stuck on with adhesive. The mail slot is small and doesn't have anything other than its slottiness to draw attention.

If I can throw it out there without being flamed.... Mail Slot + Gills are factory.... Rice to me is aftermarket non-functional dress-up
