The number is the amount of cylinders the engine has. The V part comes from how the cylinders are arranged on the engine. The V6 has 3 cylinders on each side of the engine and form a V shape as opposed to a "straight 6" which has all 6 cylinders lined up in a row. The V8, is basically the same 4 cylinders on each side making a V shape.

With no options on a camaro, the difference is about 9,000 dollars.

And the V means that there are two banks of cylinders, which look sorta like a V when viewed from the end.

The reason they are called a V6 or V8 is because of the geometry of the engine itself. Notice how the pistons in the following image make a "V":

And here's some animations, cause everyone likes animations:

V6 Engine:

V8 Engine:

And here's what one side of the V8 looks like in an animation (Coincidentally, it's very similar to what an Inline 4 cylinder engine looks like from the side:

Thanks I didn't know that is where the V came from. Now I know. C5 is a wonderful thing.

Last animation does look a bit "off" TBH... Don't think two adjacent cylinders in the same bank can move up and down at the same time...
