There's a Jewish tradition that everyone close visit the house of the deceased family for a week with food to bring comfort to this tragedy. Regardless of your own traditions, I'd recommend visiting with the family and sharing some stories about your time together. I promise that it will help all of you through this tough time.

I'm not jewish, but another thing that I and people that I know do, is that if a loved one passes away we go to the restaurant that the person liked to frequent, and no it can't be mcdonalds or subway and it definitely can't be a bar. Rent the restaurant out for a night, but ask them to keep the lights dim and no dj or anything. Bring some wine, but no other alcahol and basically have the person's family (sons, daughters, wife, best friend, etc.) give a speech about the person that has past away. Then ask the funniest person that had spent a good amount of time with the person that past away and have him/her tell some funny and good time stories about the person. After that play a slideshow of friends, family, colleagues with him. But make sure that this happens after the wake, mass and funeral.

Basically mourning for a loved one can go on for hours, days, weeks, months and for those who are most affected even years, but for that one night you can gather the group of people who knew the person and remember the person in a good way.

Also be smart about it, don't bring stuff like beer which is an everyday drink, an don't bring stuff like vodka which is meant for weddings, birthdays, etc.

And don't make it too expensive since it's not a wedding it would look bad and don't make it cheap since it's almost as if you were trying to communicate something along the lines of "f*ck the guy, I never gave a s*it about him".

I am sorry for his families loss. I know first hand how cancer can really take its tool on a family. The loved one dying from it is even worst.

The pain I went through many times with family members that have past due to Cancer comes back every time I read something like this. I lost a Nephew at the tender age of 15, my father died from it at 72 and most recently a Niece with 4 young boys at 30. My heart goes out to the family and I pray for all of you to ease the pain of losing a loved one so young and I pray that his son will some day have a man that will be a great father to him.
